Inherited Linx 8 Tablet
 

Hi,

So I have inherited an old Linx 8 tablet configured with Windows 8. Windows isn't brilliant on tablets at the best of times IMO. Anyway, this thing has an 8" screen, 32Gb drive, 1Gb memory, Intel Atom and Win 8 32bit.

It's probably usable as a general "muck about" tablet, something light to carry around for general use (not serious work) so I'm wondering what might be done with it. Is there some kind of Linux OS that has an android-like interface suitable for a small touch screen?

Could you post the make and model of this tablet? It would be helpful to know the version of Atom processor. Some are capable of running 64 bit code, some are 32 bit only.

I have a HP mini that came with a N450. The original config was 1 gig of memory and 32 bit windbloze. Intel lists specs for its Atom processors, so if you know what processor you have, that will and can affect what might work best. My mini now has 2 gig of ram, an SSD and runs 64 bit Slackware 15. Probably not possible to add ram or a ssd to a tablet though.

Most distros support touch screen today. As for a android like interface, you can customize most most distros to your own preferences. Never seen one emulating android.

I'd try to install and run antiX 23 32 bit on it. Can't hurt even if the processor is 64 bit capable with 1 gig of ram.

antiX picks up my passive and wacom pen touchscreens OK.
As usual . I recommend doing a md5sum check of any linux iso download before making the bootable live usb to save head aches later if things like hardware don't work out. Sourceforge on my ISP can error out on downloads and I end up with corrupted iso download.

FYI, this link show the specs for your processor. It is 64 bit capable.

64 bit distros give you more choice, 32 bit options are disappearing.

It is but I've been told the BIOS is only 32bit.

If you use the full iso. Which I would as you are new to this.

OnBoard keyboard is in antix package manager which is icon on tool bar.

OnBoard is a touchscreen keyboard.

Stuff is pretty configurable in our iso.
Back when I used experiment with fluxbox window manager.

I would run wbar and tint 2 in fluxbox and lose/hide the slit. I am discussing taskbar names.

I would set up tint 2 to have application launchers and clock and date and weather.
Have it auto hide when not using it.
Back when I took screenshots of that clambook touchscreen install.
Members of the forum mentioned it looked gnomish or like android.

32 bit UEFI bios on a 64 bit rig. Lots of horror stories on that gear.
I am not hip on that gear.
