This thread is for tracking the development of the 4MLinux 20.0 series.
4MLinux 20.0 Core BETA released.
This is a core system (only a few MB in size) for the 4MLinux 20.0 series. The system includes: the Linux kernel 4.4.17, GNU C Library 2.23, and BusyBox 1.25.0. The 4MLinux 20.0 series uses GNU Compiler Collection 6.1.0 to compile programs designed for the i686 architecture.
This is the first 4MLinux live CD, which can be run on UEFI machines (with both 32-bit and 64-bit firmware !).
This is the 20th release, so it should be something special. And it is! The 4MLinux live CD can now be run (and installed to a hard disk drive) on the following configurations: BIOS with 32 bit CPU, BIOS with 64 bit CPU, UEFI with 32 bit firmware, and UEFI with 64 bit firmware. All these possibilities are handled by the same Linux kernel and initrd. It is even more interesting because 4MLinux is still a 32 bit system (both user-land and kernel). AFAIK 4MLinux is the only GNU Linux offering this kind of functionality.
The final (stable) version should be released on the 1st of November 2016.
Antivirus Live CD 20.0-0.99.2 available for download.
Antivirus Live CD is an official 4MLinux fork including the ClamAV scanner. It's designed for users who need a lightweight live CD, which will help them to protect their computers against viruses. The latest version 20.0-0.99.2 is based on 4MLinux 20.0 and ClamAV 0.99.2.
4MRecover is a small live CD designed for data recovery. It's a part of 4MRescueKit, which in turn is one of the three main 4MLinux releases available for download. This version includes TestDisk 7.0 and it uses 4MLinux 20.0 as the base system.
BakAndImgCD is an official 4MLinux fork, which has been designed to perform the following two tasks: data backup (the supported filesystems are: btrfs, ext2, ext3, ext4, f2fs, fat16, fat32, hfs, hfs+, jfs, nilfs2, ntfs, reiser4, reiserfs, and xfs) and disk imaging (using Partimage, Partclone, and GNU ddrescue). This release is based on the 4MLinux Backup Scripts 20.0.
4MParted is a very small live CD designed for disk partitioning. It's a part of 4MRescueKit, which in turn is one of the three main 4MLinux releases available for download. This version includes GParted 0.26.1 and it uses 4MLinux 20.0 as the base system.
4MRescueKit provides its users with software for antivirus protection, data backup, disk partitioning, and data recovery. It is distributed in the form of a multiboot CD, which includes four (extremely small) operating systems.
This release has Antivirus Live CD 20.0-0.99.2, BakAndImgCD 20.0, 4MParted 20.0, and 4MRecover 20.0.
TheSSS (The Smallest Server Suite) is a lightweight server suite distributed as a live CD. This release is based on the 4MLinux Server 20.0, meaning that the components of the LAMP server are now: Linux 4.4.17, Apache 2.4.23, MariaDB 10.1.18, and PHP 5.6.27.
The status of the 4MLinux 20.0 series has been changed to STABLE. Create your documents with LibreOffice 5.2.3.2 and GIMP 2.8.18, share them using DropBox 12.4.22, surf the Internet with Firefox 49.0.2 and Chromium 53.0.2785.143, stay in touch with your friends via Skype 4.3.0.37 and Thunderbird 45.4.0, enjoy your music collection with Audacious 3.8 and aTunes 3.1.2, watch your favorite videos with MPlayer SVN-r37881 and VLC 2.2.4, play games with Mesa 12.0.1/Wine 1.9.20 support enabled. You can also setup the 4MLinux LAMP Server (Linux 4.4.27, Apache 2.4.23, MariaDB 10.1.18, and PHP 5.6.27). Perl 5.24.0 and Python 2.7.12 are also available.
4MLinux now supports all possible boot options: BIOS with 32-bit CPU, BIOS with 64-bit CPU, UEFI with 32-bit firmware, and UEFI with 64-bit firmware. See the recently updated documentation for details.
This is a minor maintenance release in the 4MLinux STABLE channel. The release ships with the Linux kernel 4.4.34, which restores PAE support that "magically" disappeared in 4MLinux 20.0 (sorry :-). Additionally, some popular programs (Double Commander, Dropbox, Firefox, Java RE, Opera, PeaZip, Thunderbird, Wine, Java RE) have been updated, too.
Please note that 4MLinux can be run a semi-rolling distro (no need to install it from scratch again and again). Just execute the "zk update" command in your terminal to update your 4MLinux to its latest stable version (20.1). This is a fully automatic process.
This is a minor maintenance release in the 4MLinux STABLE channel. The release ships with the Linux kernel 4.4.39. Additionally, some popular programs (Audacious, Chromium, Dropbox, Firefox, LibreOffice, MuCommander, Opera, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, Wine) have been updated, too. This is the first 4MLinux live CD that includes the Broadcom proprietary WiFi driver (aka "wl driver").
You can update your 4MLinux by executing the "zk update" command in your terminal (fully automatic process).
