This thread is for tracking the development of the 4MLinux 24 series.
4MLinux 24.0 Core BETA released.
This is a core system (only about 10 MB in size) for the 4MLinux 24 series. The system includes: the Linux kernel 4.9.52, GNU C Library 2.25, and BusyBox 1.27.2. The 4MLinux 24 series uses GNU Compiler Collection 7.1.0 to compile programs designed for the i686 architecture.
Despite its extremely small size, 4MLinux Core supports all possible boot options: BIOS with 32-bit CPU, BIOS with 64-bit CPU, UEFI with 32-bit firmware, and UEFI with 64-bit firmware.
4MLinux 24.0 BETA is ready for testing. Basically, at this stage of development, 4MLinux BETA has the same features as 4MLinux STABLE, but it provides a huge number of updated packages, including a major change in the core of the system, which now uses the GNU Compiler Collection 7.1.0.
Development Plan:
November 2017 -> BETA
March 2018 -> STABLE
July 2018 -> OLD STABLE
November 2018 -> EOL
Antivirus Live CD is an official 4MLinux fork including the ClamAV scanner. It's designed for users who need a lightweight live CD, which will help them to protect their computers against viruses. The latest version 24.0-0.99.2 is based on 4MLinux 24.0 and ClamAV 0.99.2.
BakAndImgCD is an official 4MLinux fork, which has been designed to perform the following two tasks: data backup (the supported filesystems are: btrfs, ext2, ext3, ext4, f2fs, fat16, fat32, hfs, hfs+, jfs, nilfs2, ntfs, reiser4, reiserfs, and xfs) and disk imaging (using Partimage, Partclone, and GNU ddrescue). This release is based on the 4MLinux Backup Scripts 24.0.
4MRecover is a small live CD designed for data recovery. It's a part of 4MRescueKit, which in turn is one of the three main 4MLinux releases available for download.
This version includes TestDisk 7.0 and it uses 4MLinux 24.0 BETA as the base system.
This is a major release based on the 4MLinux Server 24.0, meaning that the components of the LAMP server are now: Linux 4.14.18, Apache 2.4.29, MariaDB 10.2.12, and PHP (both 5.6.33 and 7.2.2). The 4MLinux Server 24.0 introduces three major changes: the LAMP suite has been compiled for 64-bit CPUs, NFS support (client and server) is now available out of the box, the installation CD includes so called Legacy Installer, which makes it possible to install TheSSS on machines having only 256 MB of RAM.
You can update your TheSSS by executing the "zk update" command (fully automatic process).
4MParted is a very small live CD designed for disk partitioning. It's a part of 4MRescueKit, which in turn is one of the three main 4MLinux releases available for download.
This version includes GParted 0.29.0 and it uses 4MLinux 24.0 BETA as the base system.
4MRescueKit provides its users with software for antivirus protection, data backup, disk partitioning, and data recovery. It is distributed in the form of a multiboot CD, which includes four (extremely small) operating systems.
This release has Antivirus Live CD 24.0-0.99.2, BakAndImgCD 24.0, 4MParted 24.0, and 4MRecover 24.0.
The status of the 4MLinux 24.0 series has been changed to STABLE. Edit your documents with LibreOffice 6.0.0.1 and GNOME Office (AbiWord 3.0.2, GIMP 2.8.22, Gnumeric 1.12.38), share your files using DropBox 43.4.49, surf the Internet with Firefox 58.0.2 and Chromium 64.0.3282.119, stay in touch with your friends via Thunderbird 52.6.0 and Skype for Web, enjoy your music collection with Audacious 3.9, watch your favorite videos with VLC 3.0.0 and MPlayer SVN-r37946, play games powered by Mesa 17.1.4 and Wine 3.1. You can also setup the 4MLinux LAMP Server (Linux 4.14.18, Apache 2.4.29, MariaDB 10.2.12, PHP 5.6.33 and PHP 7.2.2). Perl 5.26.0 and Python 2.7.13 are also available.
Huge amount of hardware-related improvements: added support for tablet devices (via kernel and X.Org drivers), added support for digital cameras (via libgphoto2 with gtkam and its GIMP plugin), added support for PPPoE (via kernel drivers and PPPD), improved support for UVC webcams (via v4l-utils and Guvcview), improved support for sound cards (via PulseAudio with pavucontrol), improved support for wireless cards (via kernel drivers and firmware), improved support for mice and joysticks (via kernel drivers and Joystick Calibrator).
And finally the biggest change: there are now two ISO images available for downloads: 4MLinux-24.0-32bit.iso and 4MServer-24.0-64bit.iso. The latter one is a multi-lib system running a 64-bit LAMP suite (Linux, Apache, MariaDB, and PHP).
This is a minor (point) release based on the 4MLinux Server 24.1, meaning that the components of the LAMP server are now: Linux 4.14.25, Apache 2.4.29, MariaDB 10.2.13, and PHP (both 5.6.34 and 7.2.3). Additionally, Postfix has been updated to its version 3.3.0.
You can update your TheSSS by executing the "zk update" command (fully automatic process).
This is a minor (point) release in the 4MLinux STABLE channel, which comes with the Linux kernel 4.14.25. The 4MLinux Server now includes Apache 2.4.29, MariaDB 10.2.13, and PHP 7.2.3.
You can update your 4MLinux by executing the "zk update" command in your terminal (fully automatic process).
