Question abs error: core.abs.tar.gz no such file or directory

I am trying to learn how to compile packages on Arch but I am getting a error when I try to run abs:

[root@anyhost ~] # abs
==> Downloading tarballs...
==> core...
tar (child): core.abs.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable. Exiting now.
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is not recoverable exiting now

Any ideas?

Is your /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist valid?

I assume /var/abs is empty, correct?
