How do I install Gnome ?


Hi

I have Arch 0.5 up & running now I want to install Gnome 2.4

I have tried pacman -S gnome but get gnome not in sync db !

How do I get pacman to see see gnome packages ?

Hi, To upgrade you just do a pacman -Syu. I started with 0.5 and am now running 0.6 thanks to that command.
As to gnome I have never used it but I suggest checking out packages on the front page of archlinux.org and it will give you a list of gnome packages. It might be something you would want to enquirer about on the actuall arch forums as their are probably more arch-users that use gnome there.

ahh ok just had a look then and its: pacman -Sy gnome-desktop.

Sorry to post again but just make sure you do a "pacman -Sy pacman" first before -Syu because as you might know you can get some errors otherwise (happened to me recently).

Yes that did the trick pacman -Sy pacman then pacman -S gnome rebooted Gnome log in....

P.S. Any chance of some help to set up sound?

Hi David, I havent got sound working on my machine yet (mainly because I dont need it) but I hope to soon. So I really wouldnt be much help to you. Hopefully someone that has got sound views this post and can give you some help. Good luck
