Normally, the kernel sources are just a tarball, usually compressed. Just download the tarball, and unroll the tarball. Unroll the tarball in a private directory, not in /usr/src. Almost trivial to perform; is there something I'm missing?

So, you will need a toolchain to build either natively or a cross toolchain to build on a conventional desktop PC. In either case, download and unroll the source tarball. The Makefile for your driver should have an entry that you set to point at the kernel source tree.
