I never tried icewm before because I found it's look too much remind me of windows, but now I use the SilverXP theme which just looks like windows xp and I don't care.
yeah, E17 is pretty sweet. The intriguing thing is that it looks awesome, and is really fast. Was even faster than fluxbox for a while. But i find having to click through menu's annoying. I prefer wm's with strong keyboard support...
I recently installed fvwm-crystal from unstable and I think it looks absolutely stunning! It is pretty easy to configure, has transparant-ish menu's and when I iconify applications to the desktop, the icons display the contents of the window as it looked before you iconified it! Well, I think that's pretty cool anyway. I haven't really changed or tweaked many things yet, so here's a screenshot of a basic setup.

That looks pretty good. I read some articles about fvwm, but found it a bit too complicated. Perhaps I should give it a try. How much time did you use to configure a 'basic' desktop?
I'm still figuring out how to completely modify it to my taste, but this basic desktop can be configured from the menu within a very short period of time. Maybe 10 minutes of poking around, probably less even if you quickly find a look you like. You can just try out some styles, all without manually editing any configuration files (much to my surprise).
