Unhappy XFree confing file not found?!

I installed arch, recompiled my kernel, and added drivers for my graphical card. I am a so I don't know what I am doing wrong. The problem is x doesn't seem to find my configuration file! do I have to write it myself?
help me, it took me two to three weeks get to the point to type startx and now it seems quite a disappointment

Help me please!

thanks.
Geert.

P.S. in those three weeks I learned to type a lot faster and bunch of console commands, so it was a great experience, but now I really want my X.

The command "XFree86 -configure" should make one for you. Also, you can use a tool called xf86config

I think it is not bad memory.
I have a Dell 500m laptop and compiled at least 7 times a kernel on it without a problem, and mandrake seemed to get me into X. Could it be the xfree workaround that causes this problem (need it to get my shared memory to 32 meg)?
It seems that no one else has a prloblem with that, so I don't think so... any other ideas to get this fixed?

Take a look at the XFree86.0.log found in /var/log it might give you a pointer as to what's happening.
If you see any errors, post them here.

If you don't get your XFree86 to work, try HWD - hardware detect for Arch Linux. It will create one sample file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.hwd. Rename the file to XF86Config-4. It is not yet an official package of AL but the current version hwd-1.5-2 is stable.

Download Arch Linux package (hwd-1.5-2.pkg.tar.gz):
http://amlug.org/new-projects/hwd/hwd.html

Install in root
# pacman -A hwd-1.5-2.pkg.tar.gz

It will mention about hotplug, but you don't need it to config XFree86.

Remove existing /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or XF86Config, and run in root:
# hwd

Copy:
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.hwd /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

If still problem, try to edit /ect/X11/XF86Config-4.
Run in root:
# xf86cfg -textmode

Good luck

Thanks guys, certainly gonna try that hwd tool...
Now I know sure it is arch, I got x working perfectly under debian sarge, gonna try that hwd tool. I don't know how but it can be a wrong xfree-config file, gonna try using the one I used in debian thanks all guys...

I got a fully supported laptop now (running debian while I prefer arch, I will find a way to make arch running.)

thanks guys.

greetings from Belgium, Geert

changing to gdm

Good news!

I got xfree running!

I just need some editing of the config files.

So here is my new question:

How do I change the default xdm to gdm?
