Hello - just trying out Calculate Linux. Works really good so far.

I was wondering if there is a way to see what is different between Calculate and if I were to install Gentoo myself. Obviously the kernel config is differerent and the branding is different, but are the preinstalled apps and X and xfce all straight from the gentoo rsync servers or are they changed for Calculate?

Gentoo is very very personalized. There are some defaults set but largely most installations of gentoo are heavily based on the preferences of the user who is installing it and what they setup the system to support. Cal is more defined than gentoo and has a lot more defaults setup for many operations and interoperability between applications is pre-configured, where in gentoo if you don't specify it... unless it's required you likely won't get support for it.

Gentoo is one of my favorite desktop distributions for someone experienced with linux. It's my least favorite for servers (although its very optimized, it's not feasible to maintain ~easily~ and ~safely~ in large scale data centers with thousands of machines compared to other distributions (centos and debian come to mind).)

All that belongs to Calculate is located in the overlay calculate. There you can find profiles of distros, additional tools, meta-packages, patches. Profiles of pre-defined USE flags and masks for the distro. For example you can install Calculate Linux Scratch, then change the profile to Calculate Linux Desktop KDE (cld), and then install KDE applications.
To do this:
>eselect profile set 1
>emerge cld-meta
Browse all profiles:
>eselect profile list
