Code:
mkdir /sharing ; mount -t nfs IPadrress:/home /sharing
the funny thing is that with nfs-common and portmap, DSL cannot mount the nfs. Is it possibel that Woody debian (DSL) was not compatible with the testing squeeze nfs of today?

Not really - otherwise there would be a lot more complaints about this. What we see is more stuff like this.
We really need to see the actual command and output as you entered it - copy and paste please.

mount -t nfs 192.168.100.85:/data/altamonte /mnt/test
which on all other boxes >2.6.18 works. ... The mount commands hangs. After few reboot, I tried several times; not possible.
I installed the nfs-common and portmap, like usually.
Well for logs, for the moment, I put another ligth weight distro, but still not really very happy. The best would be Debian Squeeze or Stable with a 2.4.31 kernel but this is not possible.
When I reinstalled one of my systems last year, I had a similar problem. It turned out that the portmap daemon was configured to only listen to localhost. A quick edit of the /etc/defaults/portmap file fixed it (you can also run configure-debian if you have it installed).
Of course, I have no idea if yours is the same problem.
