Boot failing

I'm trying to run DSL on an older computer that has 30ram (which i think is enough). When I boot it it goes to a blank screen with nothing but a penguin. For a minute a cursor blinks under it then disapears. Nothing else happens. This happens even if I choose to boot to text only. When I used failsafe it goes to a different screen thats some text scrolls and it stops under the line:
Checking 'hlt' instruction... OK
And nothing else happens. What could be wrong and how could I fix it?

Thanks
