Hourly Chime for DamnSmallLinux

I have damnsmall linux 2.4 installed to a pent166 with 48meg of ram and a swap file. I have added several extensions INCLUDING sox.dsl and cron30.dsl

I would like to have the system CHIME on the hour with a file of choice which I may change if I like.

I like this small system and require this function so it may replace another system in the kitchen

As the cron.dsl info file has suggested

I have added to /home/dsl/.filetool1st:
/etc/crontab

I have added to /opt/bootlocal.sh:
sudo /etc/init.d/cron start

I have a chime.au file(amoung other mp3 or.wav)

in a console window if I type:
play /home/dsl/chime.au ( the current location of the file)
the sound is played
I assume sox is playing the file

when I boot, the cron appears to be started

I went to:
/etc/crontab
I right clicked the executable and clicked view
I added this line at the bottom:
0 * * * * play /home/dsl/chime.au

this does not chime on the hour

I read that I should create a personal crontab
so I typed the line in beaver and saved as chime

then opened a console window and typed:
crontab /home/dsl/chime

this created a file "dsl" in var/spool/cron/crontab/dsl

this does not chime on the hour

I noted that it is also possible to add a executable file to /etc/cron.hourly and change the filetool from crontab to cron.hourly

I do not know how to add a exectuable file here.
I moved the "dsl" file to hourly but nothing

I added the .au file but nothing

I would like chime to NOT sound between 1 am and 5 am but for now if I can get it to chime on the hour I will be jumping for joy

can someone please help me with this

can I offer more information?
can I be more specific?
anything that will help
thanks for this opportunity to ask the question

I haven't had to say this for quite some time, but:
While this may seem like a massively important task for you, LQ is entirely run by volunteers - this means that your important task is less important to the other half million members. Repeatedly posting this is just annoying to the mod team and annoying to the rest of the members.

And with your attitude, I'd be surprised if you last long. Read the Rules - when you signed up you agreed to stick to them.

this site has no value with moderators and members who badger novice linux users and refuse to offer any help what so ever..my posts although related were specific and deserved response.
I see no reason to post further so you will be so happy to have "had the power" and forced one more linux user to windows..

can windows chime on the hour

This weeks websites NOT to visit

my selection for this week is

linuxquestions.org

Anyone who is new to linux should NOT post questions to: linuxquestions.org

This website although filled with pop-up ads and links that we all love has little to offer the novice in getting a distribution to functiion. Especially if your question is not complex enough to spark interest.

I recently ask if the tiny damnsmall linux distrobution was capable of chimeing on the hour. I also ask about the only two debian programs that claim to do this.

The moderater would not allow both posts and fused them together and then proceeded to tell me my novice questions were not of interest to linuxquestion members and I would never get anywhere asking.

This is his exact post:

I haven't had to say this for quite some time, but:

One would think with half a million members, ONE would know the answer to my question, and help to solve it.

actually I had made a third post which got a response but before I could copy it the moderator deleted the post so I could not read it.

After not being able to find my post due to it being moved and when finding it seeing 0 (zero) response except for the moderators post regarding my supposed abuse of the forum I posted that he was really a big help and told him to fuckoff ( against the rules)

I was actually useing someone elses account, he said he never used it, I did not ask why. so maby they had a strange linux love thing going on, who knows just don't do it.

So instead post questions on forums provided by your chosen distribution.

Should a forum no longer be available, or you do not see a recent post, the distribution is likely dead. So do not waste your time. There are lots of distro's available to play with on your old boxs.

As always in fairness I will post this at linuxquestions, and as I was only allowed one post, under distrobution/damnsmall/hourly chime for dsl
I'm sure they will be dreadfully excited to see it

If you are likeing damnsmall and want it to chime on the hour...best of luck with that.

If you want to try the live cd:

http://damnsmalllinux.org/

Damnsmall linux is the only distro to function for me on both a thumb and low end pentium install but the forum is now closed. which inspired a post to linuxquestions.

nextweek I will attempt to install puppy which currently has a forum. see linux installs

If you want windows to chime on the hour there are literally hundreds of free clocks. I installed 25 of them and all worked...I liked speaking clock. Works on all windows

For more freeware see:

To read about clocks and chimes see:

You are being foolish. I simply repointed you at a rule. A rule you agreed to follow when you signed up to the site.
