Configuring a minimal X environment
While in school almost 10 years ago I used Unix and X Windows daily and was very proficient as a user (the University-wide computer network was completely Unix based). Longing for the good ole days I downloaded Fedora Core 2 and installed it on my laptop a few months ago and quickly realized how much I have forgotten about Unix in general (and how little I know about Linux in particular).
While I'm very impressed with Gnome and KDE environments, I'm interested in producing an X environment that's reminiscent of my days back in school -- not so flashy, somewhat minimal overhead graphical environment. I'm not afraid oof xterm and command lines and so *may* not need the windoze-style menus and icons. I've seen a number of screenshot posts of user screens that appear similar but have no clue on how to replicate them. Does anyone have any advice of where I can look (online or text) to help me? I intend to use The GIMP to do digital photo enhancement, but the files are somewhat large and I have limited memory (512MB max on my laptop --- hence my desire to minimize my overhead). Thanks!
