BSD is what you get when a bunch of Unix hackers sit down to try to port a Unix system to the PC. Linux is what you get when a bunch of PC hackers sit down and try to write a Unix system for the PC.

There is now no country in Africa (which is larger than the EU, USA, India, and China COMBINED) where internet connected clients are 50% or more Microsoft operating systems. Linux (NOT counting chrome and android) is expected to be over 5% of all clients worldwide before the end of spring and growing. Chrome and Android are a HUGE portion worldwide.
In 1.5 decades Windows went from nearly 70% to under 55% and is still dropping.
No wonder Microsoft is dumping staff (even entire teams) all over the world!

I use many linux systems to connect to internet, but they proxy to a windoze box. lol.
I wonder what the split is for non-connected systems?
And what are we calling a "system" here, just devices that have a usable user GUI, like Windoze, kde, gnome, etc?
If that GUI check is the test, then we can't discard Android devices.
With the last few posts about "linux", if "linux" is just the kernel piece, then I guess the "Linux" vs "Windows" argument means something different, it would be more like Linux kernel vs the Windoze kernel.
So to be fair, really need to define what "linux vs windows" means, at least for the debate.

I think in this context "Linux" means "GNU/Linux", i.e. the the operating system which combines the Linux kernel and the GNU utilities. After all, that's the FOSS equivalent to Windows, not the Linux kernel as such.
I see that you rarely write any code yourself. I've been writing software for over 25 years now and I can assure you that I can think of VERY flowery expressions for some peculiarities. I see no reason not to write these expressions as a comment about particularly annoying pieces of code, as a kind of warning.
Mind you, there could be something in it. Never mind "master" and "slave"; have you ever tried grepping the F-word in the kernel source?
At your suggestion, I did. There's less than a dozen instances, all apparently because of extreme frustration with control issues of some dodgy device.
Has politeness improved on the LKML after Linus cleaned his act up? Or did that last?

Actually there has been code and comment cleanup to conform with recent "community standards" documents to make code, comments, and documentation less offensive and more inclusive. Alas, "colorful code" is going the way of the Dodo.

Actually I never considered the word that rhymes with 'duck' to be colourful. If half as much intelligence as had been applied to the code was tasked with dreaming up an incisive comment, the code would be a lot richer. People might even code for the comments!
