Gentoo on HP ProBook laptop

Hi!

I really want to try out Gentoo, but I am not sure about the compilation times of the software. I am using HP ProBook 4520s with Intel Core i5 and 4GB of RAM.

I was wondering, how fast I could compile OpenOffice and GNOME on such hardware?

Or maybe you have the same (or similar) laptop model and have some suggestions?

Thanks in advacne,
-skazhy

Hi, you certainly can run gentoo on your hardware. I run it on an U4100 @ 1.3gHz with 2gb of RAM, and emerge -e world finishes in about a day (no openoffice though, but I do have a full KDE install)

My guess would be that openoffice and GNOME should take about half a day each to compile.

Hello skazhy,

you may install openoffice as a binary package. Building it requires about half a day on a 2GHz processor. Gnome needs about 4-5 hours. In general the programms with the longest compilingtime are gcc, openoffice, the mailclients like evolution and thunderbird and the qt library.

But be aware, that you don't have to build the complete system at once.
