Devuan except for systemd related, its just a Debian system without systemd. But Devuan its recomended for mid-to-advanced Debian users and server targets, have great performance. http://qgqlochekone.blogspot.com/201...-guide-to.html

Devuan track 90% of the Debian package, only change/touch those related to systemd, and added few newer like vdev and alternative to udev.. but its not the same case of other distros, due track almost all the packages except systemd related..

There's no great differences at the user level, due Devuan its just a Debian without systemd, all the rest of packages its a Debian copy/proxy and a different theme color (that does not have contrast).

Devuan Jessie tracks Debian Jessie, ascii is tracking stretch, and ceres will always track sid. While stretch has reached stable, ascii still requires some work. Right now, debian buster is in testing and devuan beowulf, which will track buster, does not yet exist.

Due Devuan tracks most of the packages from Debian, the same rules applies when experts users want to mix/use repositories:
Release cycle Debian Devuan Winbuntu Mint
2014/2015→2018 jessie jessie trusty/utopic Qiana/rebecca
2016/2017→2023 strech ascii xenial/yakkety Sarah
As you can understand, get Debian repositories (except for systemd depends) may will work as same; if you should need some software be packaged please consult the forums at Dev Galaxy forums.

There two main technical differences: the init system, that gives to Devuan more performance; and the release cycle modernity, always behind; the rest its just copy/proxy of the Debian packages.

In conclusion Devuan are most like Debian in old days.. you must know what youare doing. good for those that like performance.. but fails ijn support and make feel the counterpart that are solid as project.

well as i posted its great the performance are very far head to Debian.. but i must track all the documentation and support to debian due in this the comunity and organization in Devuan are very fractured..

if you want to avoid systemd Devuan its perfect... respect the rest its just Debian track of packages..

the link i poted has all the info in tables of comparison to help users to hice. due debian has many other parts.. and on devuan there some of that in equivalents

I don't like systemd at all, it takes less for the system to become unstable with it (mixing a little packages from backports f.ex).
Made the switch now because I need old kernel - my 4G Huawei modem for some reason does not work with newer kernels.
Does not work with networkmanager or wvdial in any newer distro (in Salix it works but only wvdial).
I don't care if the sofware is somewhat old.

Devuan is beautiful (even if default artwork/theme is not too elaborate) :P

Devuan is needed.

I've been a Debian user since around about 1999, but when they tried to force systemd on us, I looked very carefully at my then distro of choice.

I've been using AntiX for quite a few years now, it is as systemd free as possible, but I kept an eye on Devuan since its announcement, because Debian had intended to force systemd onto its users - they have since allowed other init, which is where AntiX is now.

I am also using Devuan, in the form of Vuu-Do Linux, a very nice version using Openbox, & it has been very stable, so there is basically only the philosophies that separate the two systems.

I shall continue to also keep a foot in the BSD camp with OpenBSD, just in case.

You must have systemd, it has programmed all necessary backdoors into it to make sure our country is safe.

My lmgtfy ran across a page that lists Vuu-Do with TWELVE Devuan offspring!!!
They should submit it to DW (DW has an UNrelated discontinued Voodoo)
And Devuan should add Vuu-do to their list: https://devuan.org/os/partners/devuan-distros

I'm in the same boat (I was using Debian since around the turn of the century as well) but switched to Slackware several months after systemd was introduced. For me it wasn't a philosophical thing, which is why I stayed with it for a bit, but a user friendlyness thing. systemd was a pain in the butt when trying to track and sort out issues. It also "gets in the way" to much.

I know a number of others who've switched as well, but also just as many who are still using debian. Even though it's impossible to do so I'd love to see the stats on how much Debians user base diminished in recent years.

I have taken several looks at Devuan and I'm using a Devuan VM right now. I even did a podcast about it a while ago.

In fact, I put the VM through its paces today, installing and then uninstalling KDE. It worked flawlessly.

As far as I can tell, Devuan is a nice piece of work. I can't claim that it is better or worse that Debian, which I have installed on that other computer over there ---->, but I can say that Devuan works very nicely.

I've been using Debian ever since the very early days, also, but have begun to feel unempowered when trying to track things down. At this point, though, I do not want to learn an entire system from scratch, so I would rather not have to go over to BSD. I would be interested to hear about Devuan 2.

devuan vs debian

I tried Devuan. It is amazingly fast in my i5 with 4GB RAM, but apparently there is no nm-applet. If only this distro works well, without doubt I would switch to this distro as my main driver.

A bit hard on a new machine - even on my 2014 Lenovo B50-45 it was too much work. The software is too old on a machine where I want things to just work. I have Lubuntu 17.04 now which works fine but will switch to the up to date alternative without systemd: MX antiX. This builds on Debian itself and uses its repos but removes systemd completely using 'shim' packages to get round dependencies. It installs the systemd library but does not use it and many packages are rebuilt to avoid systemd. It has nm-applet.
I will switch to this as it is faster, works better with my Huawei 4G modem (using wvdial) and I dislike systemd. A minor prob with systemd is that it will not shut down properly from Windowmaker, takes several minutes waiting for 'stop jobs'. So not good backwards compatibility.

Been happy with Debian for past 7 years. The only thing I will say about Devuan is that I have noticed systemd slowing down boot up on some machines that use systemd. AntiX was mentioned earlier in this thread, very impressed with AntiX and it boots very fast without systemd.
