Hello,

I have downloaded Knoppix and burnt it on a DVD. Whenever I try to boot it up I can't get past the first options screen: the kernel appears to load up but then all I get is blackness.

Could the issue be related with my burning the image onto a DVD (the only burnable disc I had at the time) ?

My first thought is that this sounds like a video driver problem. Try booting up in text mode. I assume you can pass the parameter at the bottom, left corner of the screen. (useing cheat codes).
I have two machines that use the Intel on board video. Your sysptom same as mine. However, the newer Knoppix is supposed to support the Intel video chip set.
If you can boot in text mode then it's the video as a problem. To shut down in text mode issue:
sync
sync
haltsys now

Unfortunately I got mad at the DVD and threw it out, so cannot try it now... However I still have Knoppix LiveCD on my FlashDrive so as soon as I buy a pack of CDRs I'll test it!

One additional note though: I own an Acer 1694WMLi laptop w/ ATI Mobility X700 128Mb; 2GHz Intel CPU; 1GB RAM.

Do you still think it was a GPU issue?

Well, before dumping the DVD you could have checked the last messages you got and try out different cheatcodes (knoppix boot options) at boot prompt.

Anyway i wish you better luck with your next try.

Well, as it happens, I did try different boot options at boot prompt... and it was precisely the lack of output (messages) from Knoppix that made me destroy the darn disc in frustration.

Anyway, as I understand it burning Knoppix on to the DVD was NOT the problem, right? Which means Knoppix is -- or inversely, my system is -- the problem.

Any suggestions anyone?

Go back and try a text install no X-window. If it runs in text then it's a video problem - meaning Hware driver, X-win config, etc.
You don't have to use Knoppix. I've bought several systems and received good service from: Discount Linux CDs

I have looked for info but can't find any reviews or info for this very new version yet.
