Hi,

I am trying to install RedHat Ent Edition 3 for my PC. During the installation ,it can't detect my hard disk and ask for device drivers. I am not sure it is becoz of my HDD or Chipset (Mother board). But any case, the installation did n't complete and exit with error message, "No Hard Drive found".
I have already had WinXp and created new partition for linux(ext3) primary, swap with partition magic.

My System Details:
Mother Board: Intel® Desktop Board D102GGC2

HDD : Samsung HD080HJ, 7200 rpm

Linux : Red Hat 3 EE

Do I need to get device driver (linux) for HDD or chipset?
Any help would be great

Is your harddrive SCSI, SATA, or IDE? if it is scsi or SATA you may have to load extra kernel parameters.

When you boot the cd you should see where you can press one of the f# keys for extra kernel options. When you press it you will see something to the effect of boot sata kernel. Give that a shot.

There is a F4 for kernal options.But don't know what to give as parameters for HDD(SATA).
Example says linux mem=128 noprobe for RAM. But what could be the option in this case?

What port is your SATA hooked up to? If it is hooked into the Second port then that will be your problem. make sure the drive is on the first port.

Just a suggestion but also give another distro a try like Ubuntu just to see if it recognizes your hard drive.

i am using AMD64bit processor(3000+)+samsung sata hdd(HD080HJ/P).while installing redhat9 it says hard disk not found.plz help me.how to solve the problem.

well, SATA hard driver will not be recognized in 2.4 kernel and lower,you should try another linux os like RH AS4 which is 2.6 kernel.

The same problem here with a Samsung SATA (HD080HJ/P) drive when trying to install Mandriva Linux. Ofcourse, the kernel is 2.6* series. I guess I have to try a driver floppy. But, need to sort out a floppy drive first.

Sorry for the delay in updating the therad. That didn't work. I couldn't find a matching Linux driver for my SATA drive. Looks like Samsung encourages Windows. Well, I have fixed it.. but using a different OS. Ubuntu It's cool. Ubuntu detected the SATA drive without prompting for anything. Well, as I am more comfortable with KDE desktop, I installed KUbuntu later. I have to say, it's cool. Anyone still having issues, just try it out. You can download it from their site absolutely free of cost! Nice heh!?

HopingWhite ...kernel 2.4 works with SATA disks the only this is that the initial versions were not very supporting the wide range. anbures try using the latest or atleast Update 4 of RHEL3 ..they support wide range of SATA disks.

Also try using FC6 which can really be the solution for you.

The best bet is to use the latest fedora core i.e fc6 . If you specifically want the alter for RHEL 3 then i think its FC 2 or may be FC3.
