Redhat AS 4 connecting to tape library

Hi guys,

I need to connect a server to our tape library over a fibre HBA. The HBA was automatically detected by Redhat, luckily, as drivers and utilities aren't yet available from the HBA vendor as yet for Redhat 4.

Here's what comes up when I do a dmesg (bold print is relevant):

SCSI subsystem initialized
HP CISS Driver (v 2.6.4)
cciss: Device 0xb178 has been found at bus 1 dev 4 func 0
ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:01:04.0[A] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11
cciss: using DAC cycles
blocks= 71122560 block_size= 512
heads= 255, sectors= 32, cylinders= 8716

cciss/c0d0: p1 p2
Emulex LightPulse Fibre Channel SCSI driver 8.0.16.6_x2
ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:07:06.0[A] -> GSI 15 (level, low) -> IRQ 15
lpfc 0000:07:06.0: 0:1303 Link Up Event x1 received Data: x1 xf7 x8 x2
scsi0 : Emulex LightPulse LP10000 2 Gigabit PCI Fibre Channel Adapter on PCI bus 07 device 30 irq 15
scsi: unknown device type 31
Vendor: ADIC Model: iPnguin IOB Invl Rev: 42cF
Type: Unknown ANSI SCSI revision: 03
scsi: unknown device type 31
Vendor: ADIC Model: iPnguin IOB Invl Rev: 42cF
Type: Unknown ANSI SCSI revision: 03

And when I do an lspci:

07:06.0 Fibre Channel: Emulex Corporation LP10000 Fibre Channel Host Adapter (rev 01)

Bacula, the backup software I'm using just needs to address the tape unit using a /dev/xxx device. How do I set it up so the tape unit appears in /dev ?

Thanks guys.

The first scsi tape device should always be /dev/st0, then /dev/st1, etc... The library should show up as a scsi generic device, probably /dev/sg0. 'cat /proc/scsi/scsi' will show you what devices you have attached, but it won't show you their device names. Also make sure the st and sg modules are loaded 'modprobe st ; modprobe sg'.

Here are a few commands to help you figure out whats what. You'll need to stop both the bacula-sd and bacula-dir daemons to have access to the devices.

mt -f /dev/st0 status
mtx -f /dev/sg0 status
