sound not working after software updater on fedora 8

I am running fedora 8 with a creative SB audigy LS.

When I installed fedora this ran fine with no setup needed.

Today the software updater ran when I fired up the PC and ever since I cannot get sound

if I goto SYSTEM - ADMINISTRATION - SOUND CARD DETECTION. This find my card and when I run the sound test it plays the music.

If I goto SYSTEM - PREFERENCES - HARDWARE - SOUND everything is set to autodectect.
I have tried changing these but no effect.

My main software for playing video for which I use sound the most is Kaffeine.
I have tried other software but nothing plays sound.

Whenever I run anything it has the red mute X over the sound

lspci gives the following

[root@localhost ~]# lspci

I thought I had this sorted as you can see from my last post but after a reboot It goes back to the same problem every time

when i enter pulseaudo into root it fixes it
I get the following output from pulse audio

[root@localhost ~]# pulseaudio
W: main.c: This program is not intended to be run as root (unless --system is specified).
W: pid.c: Stale PID file, overwriting.
W: alsa-util.c: Device (null) doesn't support 44100 Hz, changed to 48000 Hz.
ALSA lib control.c:909snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:2
W: alsa-util.c: Device (null) doesn't support 44100 Hz, changed to 48000 Hz.
ALSA lib control.c:909snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:2
W: alsa-util.c: Device (null) doesn't support 44100 Hz, changed to 48000 Hz.
ALSA lib control.c:909snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0
W: alsa-util.c: Cannot find fallback mixer control "PCM".
ALSA lib control.c:909snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0

does anyone have a permanent fix for this whilst i can get by it is somewhat of an annoyance having to do this at each reboot

Keep reading this thread:

http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=171083

It covers all the problems related to the one you describe and the solutions. I can't say exactly which solution will work for you as I'm not at your computer, but if you read that thread and try some of the solutions then I am 90% sure you'll get it fixed.
