External monitor on MacBook Pro 2015 running Mint 17.2

Hi all,

I'm having a hard time connecting an external monitor to my MacBook. I'm using a mini-display to VGA adapter from Apple. It works fine under OS X.

When I boot up linux with the adapter plugged in, the image is cloned on my external monitor until the boot-up sequence reaches the log-in screen, at which point the external monitor doesn't receive anymore data.

Here are some (maybe) relevant info

The "VIRTUAL1" display doesn't appear if the VGA cable is not plugged in at boot-up.

If I go to "system settings -> display", the system doesn't detect any external monitor.

Not sure it's relevant but my kernel is 4.2.0-040200.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Update #1 : I've tried with a different Mini-DP to VGA adaptater (I think it's brand-free but maybe it's a dell one) and it works fine under Linux Mint with Cinnamon.

Update #2 : It works under Ubuntu (14.04 64bits live iso with kernel 3.19)

Update #3 : It works under Mint 17.3 (live iso with kernel 3.19). But this kernel doesn't recognize the touchpad. I updated to kernel 4.3.0-040300-generic and will test the VGA output when I get a chance.

Turns out it works fine with a fresh install of Mint 17.3 for some reason. Even after updating the kernel to 4.3 (which you have to do if you want the touchpad to work correctly).

...

Update #can't_keep_track_anymore : it does work on some external monitors but not all of them
