sorcerer233,
What do you mean by available? Installing linux will not wipe out this partiton unless you tell it to. However the down side is if you ever need to reload windows via the restore function it will wipe out linux too.
I got a Dell Inspiron 6400 too. I have installed a Red Hat Linux Enterprise WS 3 on it. Can have 1024x768 resolution. But I would like to have 1280x800, which is the maximum resolution that in Windows XP can get.
The monitor type is Dell E177FPm.
The chipset is Intel® 945GM.
Graphic Card should be Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950™
The moniter is not there in the Applications>> System Settings >> Display >> Hardware, so I choose Generic LCD Display >> LCD Panel 1280x800.
The graphic card I use VESA.
How can I let my Linux can have the same resolution as what I can get from Windows XP?
I will wait online, any advice is deeply appreciated!!!
Great!
Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper onto my E1505. It detected my wireless and audio and all my hardware right away, woot. The only things I had to configure was the screen resolution, which is easy peasy. The official ATI Linux installer for notebooks worked perfectly. Media buttons work, too.
Problems:
The line-out port on the sound card doesn't seem to work yet.
Nice to hear Ubontu works well on your machine, mine is a little bit tricky, Mine is an Inspiron 6400 and it does not have a dedicated ATI graphic card... It uses Inter 945GM chipset.
And some friends in forum told me if I choose i810 or i915, should cover it. But seems not....
Also, I tried that 915resolution package. but all i can find is for i386, whileas mine is i686, which means dual-core CPU i think.
I have an Inspiron 6400 which comes with the integrated sound blaster audigy advanced HD audio...does Fedora (or any other ditro) support this sound card?
Debian is hell on this laptop; don't go dell if you want to get into distros that aren't as preconfigured. I spent days trying to get etch working. I never did get a kernel compiled that read my hard drive. I didn't get the wireless card working because I wanted the kernel I was actually going to use done first.
Gentoo works out really good though. I had no dell-related problems with that. Just issues configuring use flags. Just let Gentoo initially configure your kernel for you and watch it because although it may look like your hard drive is /dev/sda it's actually /dev/hda.
I have an inspiron 6400 dell laptop Im running Debian/lenny now... it runs smoothly.
THe only prob I have is the media key not functioning and the leds for the fn keys... but everything is good!
