command prompt - username@mac address?

at a command prompt I get
Quote:
username@x1-6-110-0d-41-25-f3-47
something like that. Shouldnt it say username@servername?

I thought editing the /etc/hosts file would change that but Im obviously wrong.

Any suggestions?

Depends on your Distro. On SuSE Systems for instance you would create a file called HOSTNAME in the /etc directory with a single line containing your fully qulaified domain name (FQDN). Or you can use YaST to set it.

I have the same problem

Did you ever figure out a solution to it? If you happen to get username@servername or username@ipaddress, I would be grateful if you could post a quick synopsis of what you did.

Considering the presence of the x and a three-digit
section it's certainly not a mac address ... more likely
to be the assigned hostname that you have with your ISP.

Maybe you want to add your hostname with a
local IP address to your /etc/hosts

Cheers,
Tink
