Exclamation Mouse stays in top left corner after Mandrak 9 Install could be problem with X

Hi all
Im having a bit of a problem im trying to get into the whole linux world and having a lil problem!

After I install Mandrake 9 from decembers LINX Format cover dvd allthough installed from cd-r's (also Dual Booted along Win XP) the mouse do's not move from the top left corner of the screen or so it appears!

When moving the mouse, icons flicker and when pressing buttons stuff happens such as menu's pop up and so on so I think the problem could lie in the GUI side of things or more to the point x-server!
Please excuse me if this all sounds very lame to you guys but as I say I am just getting into linux!

This is the first linux distro I have EVER used and so I know no diffrent I have searched through the forums and the net but cannot find any answers that seam reallevent to my question!

Also I experinced problems in installing Mandrake 9 as the installation seamed to stop several times not freeze up but just stop and go no further allthough I could move the mouse the details button on screen stopped working.

When I canged my installation partion to my primary hard disk this problem stopped and installation completed.

My system spec's are:

650 Mhz Duron
GeForce 4 MX 420
Mitsumi 48X CD-RW (Primary)
LG DVD 4X (Slave)
Sound Blaster Live 5.1
56K Conexant Chip Set Modem
15 Gig IBM HDD (Primary)
12 Gig Maxator (Slave)
256 DDR Ram

Also my board has an on board sound chip which has been disabled on the bios.

Here is some system info I pulled off windows sytem Infomation that could be off use!
System Model AWRDACPI
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 3 Stepping 0 AuthenticAMD ~656 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Award Software International, Inc. 6.00 PG, 03/08/2002
SMBIOS Version 2.3
Locale United Kingdom
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.0 (xpclient.010817-1148)"
Time Zone GMT Standard Time
Total Physical Memory 256.00 MB

Also I have tried three diffrent mice on it and tried re-installing Mandrake several time now!

Thanx for any help in advance!

Paul

Couple of questions for you, may help in getting this solved.

1. Are you using the mem=nopentium option when booting?
(I suspect you are as you are getting the system up to X windows)

2. Do you have the Nvidia drivers downloaded and properly installed?

mouse stuck in upper left corner

I too had this problem. I have a NVidia GeForce 4 with 64 mg RAM. I installed Red Hat 8 instead, and everything works okay.
Tried twice with Mandrake to solve the problem, then just gave up.

Hmmm... I have the same problems but with a different video card (Intel 810). In response to jdc2048's comment: why would you a) want to pass mem=nopentium, b) how can you start/stop passing this arg if you need it.

Thanks!

P.S. Running Slack 9.0 and I have a Logitech i-Touch.
