I like the more modern styling with the rounded corners and shapes and colors which suit Android. I like the sub-tabs such as seen under the Forums. It reduces the number of higher level tabs and makes the top page look less cluttered and distracting. I see Quick Links are under forums rather than a major tab. This is good too.
Sorry I don't visit linuxquestions too often but I should and probably will in the future. I do have an HTC Android phone now too.
Smart move to add the Android platform to LinuxQuestions which is now more mature and you have a chance to add experience and value to AndroidQuestions.

+1 to getting rid of the social stuff. If someone wants to maintain internet "friendships" then he/she is better advised with a facebook account.

About the layout of AQ:
Well, I am not sure I can get used to the colors. I like the LQ theme better.
Another thing that I noticed on AQ is that the profile column, the icons, the margins and the "stuff" on the right side take up more space than on LQ. It looks a bit crowded to me. This takes the focus away from the post itself. I do not know about others but I find this very distracting. So I would really appreciate it if the AQ formatting would not be used as template for LQ.

An updated search (which includes word stemming/morphology support) has been rolled out at AQ. We'd like as much feedback as possible on this, as an improved search is one of the most requested features here at LQ.

Cool. The 'Search Tag Cloud' thingy (jargonolgy police feel free to reprimand) is exactly the kind of thing I had in mind when I suggested 'create a tool that allows everyone (not just newbies) to find heavily used keywords'. If the cloud could be updated on-the- fly with related keywords as the search terms are entered, that would be like complete magic, and would fully address my suggestion.

I do wish the 'Search Now' button was not implemented as it is, prohibiting the use of my browser's ability to 'Open Link in New Window/Tab'. I know most people don't do that very much, but... if you don't ask, you don't get.

Could we put the search tag cloud towards the top. I ran 2 searches before even noticing it was down there. Since I am a newbie at Android Questions maybe it will take a minute to remember option..

I'll admit to having little clue how most people use software tools such as browsers.

I use 'Open Link in New Window/Tab' a lot, and I am annoyed at each of the buttons in each site I frequent, that is programmed in some way incompatible with 'Open Link in New Window/Tab'.

I would expect people posting at LQ would be more sophisticated than average in use of tools such as browsers, so I think you might be wrong about "most people don't do that very much" since that should be talking about people who post at LQ.

Keeping more of the UI compatible with 'Open Link in New Window/Tab' would be a nice goal. So I'll also ask.

Improving search at LQ would be great. But I don't have time to check out search in the Android forum to see how much that is what I'd call an improvement. I do a lot of searching, including at LQ. Google search has some basic features that I use a lot whose absence are annoying everywhere else I use search tools: You can put a phrase in quotes to get exactly that phrase, rather than the individual words. (Outside of quotes) you can put + in front of a word to say it is really necessary. Maybe I'm just bad at using LQ search, but often a faster way to find a post at LQ is to google search the entire net for the right combination of words and phrases and pick the LQ page out of the google results (I know you can do better by site restricting a google search, but I never remember how when I need it). LQ's search ought to somehow be good enough that it wouldn't often be beaten by picking LQ results from a google search.

This doesn't seem to have been suggested already (though I did skim read the previous posts):

Sometimes, when you're replying to a post, someone else has already replied and you don't know this until you've posted. On another forum I use (which does use vBulletin), when you hit the button to post, you're told that there have been new replies since you started typing. You can then look at these before posting your reply (so can amend it if need be).

I think that would be a useful addition and it doesn't seem like it would have any negative impact. Of course, I don't know whether this is easily available in vB or whether the other forum implemented this themselves, etc.

We actually used to do something similar at LQ, but members didn't seem to like it so it was eventually disabled. It's possible we'll consider it as a future enhancement. Thanks for the feedback.

I find the search to be totally inadequate. Google is better. And google is really not that good.

I always use google to search a forum because forum searches are always inadequate.

For example common words and words shorter than a few letters are discarded from the search.

There is probably a "common word" file that you can empty to fix this, and hack the code so that it does not ignore words less than a few letters (there might be a setting so that you don't have to hack it).

Yea I use new tab or new window 90 to 95 percent of the time I click on a link.
I have my browser set to open link in new tab when I click with the scroll button.

The search could use spell check. For example if you search for "install softwarr" it will find no results, and not suggest a correct spelling. Interestingly, if you search for "install softwar" it will give results and "install" will be highlighted, but "softwar" will not.

And the search results page has too little information.
