Can't unmount after I unplugged usb drive on accident
Hello,
I accidentally unplugged my usb drive before unmounting it. In windows this is no big deal, so I'm used to that. However, I'm finding that in Kubuntu 10.04 this is a big deal.
Now I can't mount any other drives unless I use the command line. Also, I can't unmount anything, even if I mount it on the command line.
What do i do? I know a reboot will fix this, but if it happens again i will be right back at this point. It should not take a full reboot just to unmount a drive.
I have tried umount -l and umount -f and the terminal window just hangs.
Please let me know if this is a bug or if there is a fix for this.
-Thanks
Are you doing your umount commands using sudo or as a plain user. Unless you took special pains to permit plain user actions, any mount and unmount usually require sudo.
When something gets mounted, there is a file called mtab -- similar to fstab that tells everyone what is mounted now.
If sudo umount does not help, a reboot should clear the dead wood away.
Hello, this is a vanilla kubuntu install. So no pains were taken to get mounting going. For example, I use sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/test to mount and sudo umount /dev/sdb1 to unmount.
But usually, I go into dolphin file manager and click on the hard drive that appears on the left hand column. To unmount i right click on it and select unmount.
The issue is that no matter which method I use to mount the drive, if you unplug the drive before unmounting, all mounting functions work, but no unmounting functions work.
So to be forced to reboot just because I unplugged a drive a little early is just unacceptable. Especially since this has never been an issue in windows going back to windows 95. I would think that there should be a simple solution for ubuntu/kubuntu/all linux users. Or could this really be the way it was designed? What if I'm running a server and can't reboot often. How would someone in the situation handle this?
