Question Compiz glxgears get's around 400 FPS where OpenBox get's around 1300 FPS, Why?

I just upgraded my graphics card to something faster... (well as fast as you can go with only PCI-X slots)

I noticed when in OpenBox glxgears get's about 1300 FPS and the HELI-X simulator about 40 FPS.

But if in compiz I get 400 FPS in glxgears and 6 FPS in HELI-X.

Is there something I've configured wrong? Why would compiz FPS go down so much, should glxgears be about the same?

Should be. Maybe the configuration needs to be changed or worked on?

Part success

Never fails, I'll look for an answer for days. As soon as I post something in a forum not an hour later I find either my answer or something that helps.

I found under General Options -> Display Settings two things.

Detect Refresh Rate and Refresh Rate. If I un-check the detect refresh rate and drop the refresh rate to 25 I now get 850 FPS in glxgears and in the Heli-X Game I get about 20-25 FPS. I guess compiz is constantly refreshing the entire desktop which is why I'm seeing an issue.

Anyone else got any more tips?

Do you use compiz all the time? Try using a different window manager and see what kind of results you get.

Try to use compiz all the time. I spend about 95% of my time in one terminal window or another. So the transparency is good as I can float the window over a gedit or chrome screen for typing commands.

But I guess to play games the best thing is to switch to openbox temporarily. The refresh rate trick seems to be working pretty good for everything else though.

Another strange thing though. If I bring up the benchmarks from compiz I get 45 FPS with my playing. If I move the mouse back and forth rapidly the refresh rate goes up to 70-80 FPS.

LMAO yeah that is weird man, I never heard of that one. Maybe run a script to emulate your mouse moving all the time? (Joking....)

Seriously now, I never heard of that. I don't even know where to start with that one. Anyone else have any ideas?
