I have found a way to print to my Lexmark E321,
using
the US Robotics 8000A-02 parallel print server (router and switch)
I got nowhere with the SUSE 10 Add Printer dialogue, and failed with the
apsfilter on another computer connected using Damn Small Linux (DSL), but
using the web based CUPS add printer (h**p://localhost:631) I managed to produce a
test page with the following settings from my DSL box.
Description : (optional) LexOnRouter
Location: 192.168.123.254 (or whatever you set the IP address to be - this is the default for the router, mine is different)
Device URI: lpd://192.168.123.254/lp
Went back to my SUSE 10 box and tried the same
Name: Lexmark
Location: 192.168.123.254
Description: LexOnRouter
{Continue}
Device: LPD/LPR Host or Printer
{Continue}
URI:lpd://192.168.123.254/lp

Mfr: HP

Make: HP Laserjet 4 (hpijs)

and the Test page printed out !!!
Now all I need is a Lexmark specific printer driver to give me all the extras.

Update - changing the SUSE machine's IP address (I changed the DHCP range on my smoothwall) ,meant I could no longer print from the SUSE machine. YAST could not find any printer server using the search facility (under the Hardware, Printer section) so I used YAST to remove the entry for the printer, and tried a test print from the CUPS web admin page - all seems well. I have also gone back into YAST since and the correct entry now appears there
Queue name : Lexmark
Device /192.168.1.2/lp
Model: Optra E321 [except I dont think its an *OPTRA* E321], and I haven't told SUSE ita an Optra - has YAST now found the printer by itself????? Maybe all my efforts were in vain!
I now also cant access the CUPS pages on administration, modify or configure printer - just says "forbidden" - not an issue at the moment because it works, but may require some more forum searchng to resolve.
Distribution: Dabble, but latest used are Fedora 13 and Ubuntu 10.4.1

Rep:
You have the same printer I have: The Lexmark 321, which is also sold as a Dell P1500 laser printer. The Optra 321 is NOT the same thing.
Lexmark does have drivers for various forms of linux that can be installed for the 321. I do not know if SUSE 10 is included in the list (I'm running Fedora Core 4, and it is not a supported form, although other Red Hat variants are supported. Between that and my ignorance, I was never able to make the Lexmark download driver work.), but you can check.
Bottom line: Go to Lexmark's web site, browse, and good luck. They do have drivers.
Lexmark do indeed do a package for SUSE 10 for the Lexmark E321 that I had already downloaded and installed - didn't mention that in my history sorry. However it seems unable to find the printer on the router print server, and could not find it when it was attached to a DSL box (working through CUPS) either. There may be another way to utilise the drivers provided but I haven't yet had the time to work out how (or whether).
I'm glad you confirmed my belief that the Optra E321 and the E321 are different printers. It appears however, the default driver for the Optra E321 is the ljet4 - presumably an HP laserjet 4 driver. Although different(?) from the hpijs I picked out it seems to work fine with the E321 for the undemanding text and graphics I have tried.
