FYI: that niche has traditionally been filled by IRC and FreeNode.
FreeNode is gone. (Long, sad story.)
In its place several groups have set up their own networks and sometimes let people and groups set up additional channels if they ask nicely and there is overlap with the goals. One of those is Libera.chat but that comes with a lot of strings attached. However, there are about 500 other public IRC networks, but the non-public ones and semi-public ones are not on that list, which might be available for use too, depending on the project.
It would be nice to have a Discord server. Makes things a lot quicker and easier.
Okay, is anybody stopping you from having a Discord server? In other words, why are you telling us about this?

"strings"? Do you have any references elaborating on that? I was under the impression that pretty much all the projects using freenode moved to libera.chat.
Not really, as it is hard to search for and find things on Discord. Plus it is not open source and it is a pain to export data from it if you want to move. The link posted by @Turbocapitalist points out other issues with Discord such as accessibility issues, walled gardens etc.
One of the best features of the forum is the ability to search for answers and the easily consumable result set. Plus I don't need to install another software / app on my phone/system to access the information which is a big advantage.
