Happy New Year - Looking for ways to improve LQ.
As the year comes to an end, it’s a great time to reflect on the year that passed and look forward to the year ahead. While 2010 was another great year for LQ, we know there is always room for improvement. While 2011 will see a major code update (we'll post more on that as it gets closer to fruition) we're interested in ways you think LQ can be improved. From major changes to minor tweaks, please use this thread to let us know what you think. We thrive on user feedback and many of the changes we've made in the past are a direct result of member feedback. For a teaser on what's already in store as part of the aforementioned code upgrade, you can expect to see a vastly improved search, mobile apps for android and iPhone, a much improved articles/tutorials section, a cleaned up HCL/reviews section and an entirely new editor.
Thanks again for making LQ one of the best communities on the web! Visit this blog post if you're interested in some 2010 Browser and OS statistics for LQ.
Isn't there already a thread for this? Or do we get a fresh one each year ?
Seriously though, I do have a request:
Could non-moderators move threads if need be? It would need restrictions, such as not moving out of General, and being limited perhaps to Senior Members...

You get a new one each and every year We don't have any plans to allow members to move threads at this time, but you should expect some increased level of senior member participation at some point (mostly centered around addressing very obvious mass spam attempts).

UPDATE: As a thank you for participating in this thread, we'll be randomly selecting 5 posts one week from today and will upgrade each members account to "Contributing Member" status for all of 2011. Good luck!
Jeremy, how about a way to change our display name? I've adopted an alias since joining in 2003 that I'd like to use here. The Display name could always link back to the original name if that'd make sense.

i think a simple one would be moving the 'log out' link farther from the 'new posts' link on the front page, i've lost count of how many times i've mis-clicked logout when trying to view new posts, thank god for the confirmation dialog

I have used View Latest Posts for that same reason.
The "cookie crumb" navigation option back to higher levels in the forums is not very user friendly for those of us who don't know anything about post-XP windows.
=D
How about a "return to (current topic's sub forum)" and a "return to (main board)" button along side the "post reply" button for the newbie in us all?
No? Then how about a gingerbread cookie emoticon available among the defaults? Who doesn't like gingerbread cookies?
I'd say a very good thing would be a break with proprietary software (such as vBulletin). If you can't use alternative forum software how about LQ either creates one itself or forks it from another existing project (such as FluxBB)?

you mention above, an "entirely new editor" is in the works in the near future. If I'm guessing correctly, this applies to the "quick reply" and "advanced editor"s, etc., for composing posts, right? Well what about the editor where one composes PM's to other members? Is that the same editor, and/or will that editor also be 'fixed' - it has some very strange line-wrap behavior (or lack of), else the resulting edits & message can end up a mile long off the side of the screen, requiring scrolling left/right to read it.
This isn't an original idea, but the Linux Distributions area needs a bit of housekeeping. Some of these haven't had posts in a long while. I also think that the links should fall down the page and not across. I realize this would make the page longer, but it would sure be easier on new members to find their way around.
I am very glad to see LQ focusing on mobile devices, and can't wait to see what an LQ Android application will look like, but I would still suggest looking into making the site more mobile-friendly in general. There are many small-screen devices out there with HTML browsers, not just Android and iOS devices. We should also take into account that a lot of LQ's traffic is from organic search results, so mobile users who simply came across LQ via a Google search shouldn't have to install a native application to get the most of the site.
I have also wondered for quite some time why LQ Wiki accounts are not linked to the regular LQ user accounts. I know a few times in the past I wanted to edit or create a page on the Wiki, only to be asked to create yet another account, which put me off of the whole thing. It seems like unifying the login would increase use of the Wiki by making it easier for existing LQ members to edit.

The editor(s) create their window in the upper left corner instead of using the available breadth of the screen in use when one creates a post. (Uarg, I tested it right now going from a begun "quick reply" to "advanced" and it did not happen).
<edit1> Sometimes they switch fonts too. Right now it is Courier(?) sometimes Arial -- and that is when the size of the window is, umm, sub-optimal. </edit1>
<edit2> Arial comes up in a much to small window when I click on the "Quote" button </edit2>
Okay, lets say their behaviour is not always consistent (or predictable from this side of the bulletin software). I think Anisha_Kaul has commented on this already. Could you please look into that a little deeper?
As well as wanting to give a +1 to MS3FGX's suggestion of more of a focus on mobile devices, I wanted to make a suggestion about the '...find other posts by this user...' feature.
If you are using this to have a look at the posting history of a new or new-ish user (usually to see if they have a history of repeating some particular transgression of the accepted norms, or not), it would be very helpful to see immediately in which threads they are the original poster and in which threads they have just added a comment.
I clicked a link inside the monthly "Community Bulletin" mail, which led directly to an attachment (i.e. an image) that someone posted.
So, why do I have to log in to view such an attached image (as opposed to viewing a thread)?
It is not a major inconvenience (as long as I remember my password, anyways ) but I nevertheless do not see the point in it.
