What about the situation of the lurker, who finally sees a problem they can solve, a question they can answer. So they sign up, and... have all sorts of difficulties because they are classed as "newbies" Lurker is hurt, and so is the community, because we lose that answer.
I think that a little bit of gentle guiding goes a long way, people learn to post better as they go. I think we can cope with a little bit of "noise" - this isn't a straight-laced academic morgue!

Am I glad of that!!!

but be forewarned, you will need an asbestos skin. :-)
Most Knowledgable people provide proper info on the situation
The smart lurkers you refer to are providing responses, not posting Q w/ incomplete information. Probably know enough specifics.

IMHO Knowledgable people stumbling on this forum will not hang around long when they see the Sheer quantity & poor quality of initial threads.

Then why are the moderators still having so many problems w/ numbers of posts, not enough information in them?
Knowing HW & SW can be solved in one step, just enforce it.
As Matir stated People just need to learn to write a proper post!
t_g If quick sloppy posts w/o research on their own get A, what incentive is there to improve?? aka Grade Inflation in USA!

I wouldn't class it as a problem, as such - the number of poor posts set against the total number is tiny. Normally, after someone has been pulled up for their first post, they don't repeat the "offence"

As XavierP indicated, the number of poor posts as a percentage is quite small. We have no plans to increase the barriers to posted here at LQ. In fact, we try to do everything we can to lower them. Education, an intuitive interface and policy are the answers here, IMHO. Our goal is to help people use Linux and Open Source. Making it difficult to post would directly go against that goal (even if it would make our lives a bit easier). This isn't something that's up for discussion - it isn't going to happen.
or maybe a give away a new pc every month. Truth is folks would sign up just as much for a free Tshirt.
Seriously, you don't need to give away anything. I think LQ is pretty darn cool the way it is. You have plenty of traffic it appears. Response time has gotten better lately, and that's a good thing.
Keep up the good work guys & THANKS!!!!!!!
I don’t know if anyone has asked this before, though I searched around a bit before posting this. I think it would be helpful to know what kind of search syntax is built into LQ search. For example, when searching the web with google, I make heavy use of things like quotation marks and the ‘+’ sign, among other things. On the google site, there is a page talking about search syntax. Is anything like this available in LQ? If so, I think it would be great to make a short tutorial about those features.

We use MySQL FULLTEXT for searches here at LQ, so all the rules that apply to that apply to us. We may look at something like lucene in the future, but at the moment I think we've scaled the search acceptably (I've not heard a complaint about speed since the last update). If a syntax page is something members are interested in, we can add something to the FAQ.
A seperate "Which Distro" Subforum would be nice, that way people can have their threads answered individually as oppose to it being lumped in with all the rest.
I mean that thread at the top of the Distributions forum is getting VERY big, and just serves as a giant dumping ground which IMHO serves no purpose
