http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...icle&artid=277 - 2322 people have read this, at this time of writing. If you have the time to write a companion piece as detailed in your post please do so. The only problem is that not enough of the "right" people read these pieces - by which I mean the people it's aimed at.

The more instructions we have, the better.

the morons are getting me down. I would post a "Use google the search engine, search LQ, clearly repost." but then that wouldn't really help to answer the question. Sigh... the ones who haven't read the rules, it is there first post, and they just don't understand. ah well. Things have changed now that I no longer am a moron and consider myself a regular member of the community. (though with school my hang out time has dropped.)

well i assume that's how many people feel, but those sorts of replies will never have any mass benefit. there never will be as it's the new people that have the trouble, and so it just can never end.. we just need to do what we can to encourage them to get it right in the first place, without doing anything to drive them away.

Hear, hear. As linux moves from the geek reserve into the mainstream (desktop that is) its only going to become a more frequent issue. I find it hard not to reply to posts entitled "HEEEEEEEEELLLLPPPP, noob i5nt l33t, y CounterStrike no work in Slackware??????" with something short and sweet. I usually take a deep breath and start with "Hello and Welcome to LQ"....

right acid: that's how I feel, but I don't do it. A hello and welcome to LQ sounds like a good idea, snecklifter/

Um, what are the eldest 0-reply posts you count "salvageable"? Shouldn't those exceeding this limit be deleted? Else people would eventually find them in searches...

Also, I'd suggest not to bring the newest posts alone to the top of the page. How about mixing new and old (salvageable) posts to give them a chance at getting answered? Else people like me will only work on the newest 5 minutes of the posts and thereafter our efforts will be flagging, thus effectively depriving older posts any chance of ever getting an answer...

Actually, even if a post was old, I would look to see if there was a newer post that was relevant (with a solution) and place a link in the old thread to the new thread. That way, if someone DOES find it in a search, it will direct them to the new thread.

i'd just like to blatantly bump this thread, and also thank the members who have been helping to keep the total from growning too quickly. There is still a little background tweaking going on in terms of what will be shown in the search, but there's be a hugely noticable slowdown in the number of threads adding to the pile!

well done everyone, and keep up the good work!

in the search is there a way to sort the zero posts by section? then it would be easy to wipe out the zero reply news articles with a "cool, good read" etc.

In each forum, at the top, is a link to show just the zero posts in that forum. It's below the "new thread" button at the top right.

Now that you mention it, on mouseover, I see it's '&forumid=7' but I never looked closely at it before, thinking it was just an alternate link to the one on the main page, which is what I always hit. I'd suggest 'View all threads with 0 replies' be changed to 'View all threads in this forum with 0 replies' or, if that's too long, 'View this forum's 0 reply threads'. But that's cool to know.

I think more people need to know about the '0 replies' RSS feed, and Firefox's 'Live Bookmarks' - I've replied to vastly more '0 reply' posts since they started appearing in my bookmarks. . .

thanks XavierP
yeah I agree oneandoneis2

The live bookmark thing is totally cool. Is there a place where I can write something like a tutorial for this? I guess I'm asking if there is a specific LQ section in the wiki.
