My number was entered correctly the first time. It still does the same thing. intializes the modem and it just stays there and doesn't do anything, forever.
Should I uninstall the whole program (Mandrake) and reinstall?
How do I re-enterer just the modem installation?
I was reading my Mandrake 6.0 user manual, I know I have Mandrake 9.2, but it says Mandrake will not work with a winmodem.
I know during installation it asked what time of modem I had and I did not check a winmodem.
Also, if I were to purchase an external modem, will Mandrake 9.2 automatically notice that (just like windowsxp does on reboot) that a new hardware device has been installed, and install the drivers automatically for me, or, do I have to somehow install the drivers?
Thanks,

Under the Accounts tab click on the account you have set up. A new window will open. Click on the number you currently have set up and then delete. Click new then put in the phone number just like you would have to to dial with a phone. If you have call waiting and want it disabled while you are on the net, add "*70," then the number. The *70 disables it in most places and the ',' is a pause for the computer to process the request.
If you have earthlink in there it won't dial. It won't understand the letters.
You may have better luck with this. If you are unsure about the number, just pick up the phone and dial it. You should hear a bunch of squeels. Is that spelled right?
This was one of the 1st steps I had tried originally before posting, and I checked winmodem, and it says it can't locate the modem.
When I look up my hardware installation it shows the modem there as a question mark ? with unknown device listed above.
What do I do next?
I got on this mission to install the KPPP dialer because it would work with Thiz-Linux Operating system.
Any other suggestions?

brew1brew, I just tried the wizzard again and clicked the winmodem box, and it tells me I don't have a winmodem.
Why?

Touchdown baby! Hey I did it, I am on line right now with Mandrake! Yahooooooo!
Hey I wanted to thank a few guys on here for their great support, I couldn't have done it without your input and your great help.
Those great thanks and gratitude go to Skyline, LGMike, and more specifically Dalek and Quatsch for their expertise, guidance and patience with me. I couldn't have done it without you guys, thanks again.
OK, this is what I did, I called Best Data's Tech support line and they told me my modem, a Best Data Internal PCI Modem, Model # 56HP92-PCT, is/was not compatible with Linux.
OK I said, so do you make any modems that are?, I asked. They said they did, Best Data 56SF and Best Data 56SX, both external modems. I then called Fry's Electronic's and they had one of the models on hand, and with a rebate, so I purchased it, and hooked it up.
I then opened by KPPP dialing properties set-up box and initialized the modem and I actually watched the numbers plug themselves into the box. When it did this, I knew it was going to work, well at least I felt confident.
Since I had already entered my other settings, as in password, user-name, and dial-up number, all I had to do is hit connect and it dialed right onto earthlink's web-server.
If anyone out there needs any help or a modem, if you can't find one in your local area, let me know and I can/will pick one up if you make arrangements for shipping and actual cost of modem, I will mail it to you.
You helped me figure out how to set-up my KPPP setting because they apparently were not installed. I had to pull them out of my 3rd CD disc, if I recall correctly.
Thiz-Linux had a command it would run and it would open up the KPPP settings. Mandrake is a little different.
Somone also told me that a winmodem may not work, and to install possible patch drivers. I felt the external modem was the better route, because the box says, Linux, Windows98, 95, XP, & ME. It also has a special feature for call waiting, which my other modem did not have.
Anyway, it's a quite dialer.
Question, what speed do you have your 56K modem set-up at?
Can you go up as high as 97000K
I set mine at 5600 or 5700, can't remember.

Glad you got it going. That new modem must be a 'real' hardware modem.
Don't know how I helped but I was going to stick in there with ya.
Actually you can't set the speed. At least I can't find a place to set it in mine. The speed setting you see in the setup is for the speed between the puter and the modem. The modem starts out at the max rate and keeps dropping till it can lock on the the other modem at your ISP. Mine happens to be 24K.
Once you get used to Linux, you will find yourself running windoze less and less. It is different. Some stuff is harder to install and setup but once it is done it works and is stable. Here's a example.
I saw one the other day that was 70 days. I saw one on the screen savers that was over five years. It was a ISP. I like that. I doubt windoze could make it.
Sounds like you have a pretty good modem connection. I think that's the max. Want to trade? he he he he
Bell South: I'm still waiting on DSL!
Mandrake 9.1 has a lot more on the CD. I found Scribus. It's like Quark Xpress. It's about $900.00. Free with Linux. There is a lot on there. I need to browse around.
Oh, if you have temp sensors on your mobo, install lm_sensors first and run 'sensors-detect', from a command line, then install gkrellm. It's on the 3rd CD I think. Just goto start thing and then Configuration/Packaging/Install Software. Type in what you are searching for. It will find the CD and ask for it.
I love Linux. I want to move on to better distro's now. Gentoo want work with my modem. No ppp support. Slackware maybe???
dolphans1, I assume your here in Dallas area, you can't get cable? it's SOOOOO much better than dialup. Oh well I won't rub it in (I get over 2 meg download and 256 upload), I'm glad you got it going, I'm sorry you had to go spend more $$.
Hey I hear Suese is the best Linux out there and they provide tech support, but I don't know. They claim to be owned by Sun Systems don't they? Don't they have some sort of lawsuit on or over the Linux kernel? Somewhere I heard this, don't know if it's rumor.
Any good Linux wallpapers or screen savers?

Yeah I can get cable, but can't justify the cost. 29.95 or 49.95 per month sounds like a lot.
Hopefully in the long run I'll recoup the cost.

It wouldn't dial-up? Not even with the KPPP settings?

I'm disabled but I'd pay the price for DSL. Bell South, I'm still waiting. It's only about 2 to 3000 feet you know.
