I didnt say he wasn't better off with '06. As you noted "however 10.1 standard packages may cause problems on an Updated 10.1 system". I just thought updating with '06 rpm repositories would cause a bigger headache than it was worth. But he isn't using '06 he is using 10.1 so i pointed him to 10.1 repositories. Indeed I agree he would be better of with '06 but it's his choice what he does. It seemed from his post that the '06 rpms he was trying to update to did indeed break something. I have tried to update an entire system with next-level rpms and broke things as well. As I have read on various threads it's recommended that you update with an update CD, not rpm repositories. Is it possible? Sure. Easy and a good idea? Not so much.
10.1 is what I happened to have on had when I decided to do my first Linux install. I was going to do it a while ago, but never had the time. During the holidays I knew I would have more time to devote to my Linux system.
I am sure Mandriva 2006 is much better than Mandrake 10.1. I was just shown that my selection of updates was for the newer version and not my current version. I have since downloaded the latest version of SUSE Linux and I am also currently downloading Mandriva 2006.
This install of 10.1 wasn't meant to be a permanant install, but more of a learning tool. I am learning quite a bit and I really like Linux. I look forward to more installations on my other machines.
You have to get out of kde's gui to uninstall it, otherwise it's a bit like trying to pull the rug out from under yourself.
I also remember the nightmares of getting everything back in order after the dependency conflicts of thac, great work, thac, but not so straight forward to upgrade.
uname -r in a console shows kernel version

Thanks for the info. I did urpmi --auto-select after all you listed while I was still in init 3, and it took quite a while to get it all down, but my machine is working quite well with none of the problems mentioned. Except rpm -e didn't register, I had to dig around a bit to get that part to work.
As well as that, we've had storms in this part of the world and I still have some updates to get later, but the machine is cooking.

I made a brack and mounted a 33CM electric engine fan.
Its running of the 3Volt rail provided by the standard AUX plug on my ATX psu.
its silent at 3v and forces air enough to make the small wires move and heaps of hot air flow out the front.
