Kernel panic: Fatal exception in interrupt

I got the Mandrake 10 install finished, and when it rebooted, I choose linux, then I got this error.

Code: 00 77 07 b8 ea ff ff ff 5d e3 89 0d c0 51 32 c0 5d c3 90 89 74 26 00 8b 0d cc 86 40 c0 55 41 89 e5 31 c0 89 0d cc 86 40 c0 <87> 05 b0 d0 ff ff b8 00 e0 ff ff 21 e0 8b 50 14 81 c2 00 00 01
<0>Kernel panic: Fatal exception in interrupt
In interrupt handler - not syncing.

I also tried "linux noapic nolapic" before, and it just hung @ "Activating Swap". With "linux noapic nolapic acpi=off" it did the same thing, hang @ "Activating Swap".

System Specs
Dell 2350
1.6 Celeron
256MB of RAM
Radeon 7000
Onboard Sound

Reboot and as soon as you see the lilo screen hit the Esc key which will take you to a boot prompt. At the prompt type in the following:

linux noapic nolapic acpi=off

and hit the Enter key.

If that doesn't work, post your hardware. And before going any further, did you check the md5sums on the isos you downloaded? If you have a bad download, you'll have all kinds of screwy problems.

Yea, I checked the md5sums, and all were good. I had tried "linux noapic nolapic" before, and it just hung @ "Activating Swap". With "linux noapic nolapic acpi=off" it did the same thing, hang @ "Activating Swap".

Unfortunately there is a serious conflict or kernel bug.

ACPI is used to manage Interrupt routing but by including the acpi=off you've disabled it.

This causes the kernel to use the bios defaults which are not always correct or applicable, nor are all IRQ's and IRQ sharing correctly reported.

This kills the IRQ handling process in the kernel causing the error you see.

First see if you can enable ACPI.

Then in the BIOS set the PNP OS entry to read NO save and exit.

At worst, open the machine and try to move some of the cards around.

Usually when the above happens (at boot) it is because the IRQ allocated to the IDE or drive controller, is being shared with another device, but the kernel does not know about the other device due to the lack of ACPI support on an ACPI system...

Also note that a later kernel will often address these issues a bit better. I've seen cases where-in the same message is printed AFTER startup or shutdown by an AGP driver, etc. and a kernel upgrade was better able to deal with the IRQ event handler.

I started with just booting normal, and it still gave the kernel panic.

Yes.

A normal boot is similarly affected.

Um. I though I just did explain.

Try setting the BIOS as I indicated,

Try turning ON acpi as I indicated.

Try moving cards around as I indicated.

If all else fails, try another kernel.

OK I am just starting to break the bands of Microsoft. I also have this Kernel Panic error. What do you mean by try a new Kernel? Is it try a nother OS? I have loaded Mandrake 10.1 off of these CD's succefully twice, but for some reason this old Gateway box (this is probly why it will not work) will not load it.
