I just installed mandrake 10 on my Inspiron 5100 and made sure to install the acpi but still dont get an icon in the taskbar.
I also made sure its checked in the boot options. How do I make it show up?
I had no problems with it in 9.2
On a side note, in mandrake 9.2 i could double tap my touchpad (mouse) to double-click on things. But now in mandrake 10 i have to actually click the button underneath. ??????
Noticed that too - not too worried about seeing my battery life, but yes, double touch the pad is much nicer... wonder if there is a way around that.
Also, for us newbs, when you mentioned that you added those lines to lilo.conf, care to go a bit further in depth, I tried to add them and when I ran lilo to test it, it told me they were invalid.
Install on my Shuttle SNG41 XPC.... They added the drivers for the nVidia chipset to 2.6. so that made configuring sound, video, net, etc... a breeze. One thing I did notice however, while installing on a secondary drive there is a screen that mentions it can not read hda or hdc and is going to erase all contents. I was worried for a moment that it would wipe my WinXP install on hda1, but since I install 10.0 on hdc and never touched the partition info for hda, my XP install was still there. Only required that I manually add Windows to lilo... no biggie...
So the only running problems I have to solve no is Java support for Epiphany, USB Flash driver, and my wireless mouse....
I just installed mdk a few hours ago, when I get everything up, I post, but I'm sure it's just a few needed libs like always.

I have Mandrake 10 installed on my D600 as well. So far I only have 2 problems.
1. Changing the screen resolution by editing XF86Config-4 or through any of the mandrake "wizards" doesn't seem to work (really strange)
2. If after a fresh install, I use anything but KDE, sound is fine, but as soon as I log into KDE (my prefered environment) The sound no longer works out of the speakers, but the headphone jack works though. If I go back into the other desktop environments, sound is still messed up there too. I haven't figured out what settings get changed yet, but a fresh install is the only way I know to get the speakers to work again.
VMware was a little bit of a pain to get working too. Had to download a patch to get it to compile against the 2.6 kernel. Then I had to enable legacy emulation on the DVD/ CD-RW drive to get it to work.
Other than that though, everything is running very well. I got NDIS wrappers working with the built in Trumobile 1300 wireless NIC.
I am unable to login to the system after it boots.
When I installed Community 10.0 Mandrake I prefered not to go for autologin. Will this be the problem..
My problems are:
While booting...
1) Mounting local sysytems: mount: mountpoint swap does not exist [failed]
but actually I have swap and it is working fine before on 9.2
it booted slowly[2 minutes approx]
Then the login window appears, when I click on a user and enter password, I am getting warning "no write access to $home directory"
"kde is unable to start"
Then it is giving an option to try to login with other username. But I created only one user while setup, and there is no option to login as root in the login box I am getting.
I tried to change the chice to Gnome and even it is giving the same error. At this point I am getting option to halt... I say yes system is shut down.
Any clue... please.. I am a linux newbie can't do much without help
Thank You Jakkin for those links. Im definitely going to try this tomorrow night.
I've been using my laptop for a good portion of the day, just installing stuff, and I'll tell u what,, my freakin hand is now crippled from using that damn button.
Im just so accustomed to using the "tap-tap", that now my hand actually hurts from breaking the habit. (um thats not a sick joke either )
Anyway, I've managed to get acpi to say it is running in services, but its still not in my taskbar, and I highly doubt its even on.
Originally posted by Jakkin The touchpads are not working in 2.6.3
see these for help, I cant be assed to go through all them to enable tapping on the touchpad, so me back to 9.2 until official 10.0 is out. :s
Anyone got any success make sure you post here when i wake up
Not under 2.6.3, but I've found the 2.4.25 kernel with Mandrake 10 Community is working fine, seems faster than 9.2 and fixes a few other bugs. You might want to move to that.

I can always tell if ACPI is working. If it isn't, the power supply and laptop rapidly become hot enough to fry eggs on.

yeah I heard mandrake 10.0 come with 2 kernels, mind to show me how to quickly swap kernels? Thanks Also does acpi work for you in 2.4.25?
I downloaded 3 ISO´s (4th is contrib and can not find a ftp site).
Burn under 9.2 3 CD´s with k3b.
Installed Mandrake 10.0 community, although system asked for 4th CD??
Contra:
Font issue on my notebook Compaq presario 714ea
(Have to say fontsize 14 to get 12 under 9.2: any ideas?
Had to recompile the kernelsource (2.4.25) for the amd/duron ACPI problem.
No idea how to compile the 2.6.3 kernel.
After compilation, no problem at all, battery meter on the traybar!
Do not like the ugly splash screens and background (The mdk 9.2 are better)
KDE3.2 still not mature because Mandrake/cooker is having many updates, and even
kde3.2.1 is nowhere to find
Do not like the new Configure Your Computer layout although the contents is better!
System not recognizing my logitech wheel mouse, but after recompiled 2.4.25 kernel system
recognized it and usb was working correct although I get 2 icons and can not delete one!
System update not working because Mandrake is not supplying directories/ftp sites for it (When??)
Pro:
Well, that is the problem, at the moment i not sure that this version IS BETTER THEN 9.2 !
I do hope mandrake will supply so many updates that the system will look surprisingly different then 9.2
I'm using the download edition so I had to manually install nvidia drivers etc. Now everything is working except I have some problems getting my usb key to work. And flash player wouldn't work with the mozilla firefox rpm no matter what I tried. After downloading firefox from the official site everything worked just fine (edit: and I installed one package listed on the next page). Gnome seems to be pretty much bug-free, no idea about KDE since I doń't use it but I've noticed that theres plenty of updates for it already. Also mandrake control center seemed quite buggy in the beginning but it's had some updates already and is now working fine.
Anyway, no major problems so far and everything is working currently so I'm satisfied Whole system feels more responsive and faster than in 9.2
You are right to say that Mandrake does not provide good (i.e. working) update site FROM the Mandrake Update application... However, you can still make this work pretty easily by doing the following:
1. Go to the list of Mandrake's ftp mirror sites for 10.0 i586 (not i586 ISOs, just i586) and select the one that you want (according to location, preference, speed of ftp site, etc.).
2. You won't be in the directory where the RPMs are stored, so just select the Mandrake directory, then the RPMS directory... Now, you should see a lot of RPMs. Please note that the updates are in the same directory as the initial RPMs since it is not yet a production-stable OS version.
3. Now, do a copy (highlight it and do a ctrl-c) of the ftp address from the browser's address bar.
4. Open the MandrakeLinux's Software Media Manager application from the System->Configuration->Packaging menu. Then, just click the Add button. Select the "Security update" radio button and paste the ftp address copied earlier. Press OK and the system should perform all the verifications and download the hdlist.cz file (you don't need to specify the relative path to this file)... It may take a while and it is possible that it fails... If it does, just select another ftp site (some are slow, some are not stable). I know, it may be painful, but it will work.
What do you get by doing all this? Well about over 400Mb of updates (as of March 13th)! And you can bet there will be a lot more coming until next May...
