fonts

I'm running Slackware 10.2 with an NVidia GeForce video card, 1280x1024 resolution. The graphics, generally speaking, are great, but the fonts (or the font rendering, more precisely) are jagged, uneven, and choppy.

Does anyone know how to configure the system so that the fonts appear smooth and even, like they do in XP Pro or OS X?? I've tried modifying the "Fonts" section of my xorg.conf to the following:

RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb"
FontPath "/usr/X11/lib/fonts/TTF"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic/"

Additionally, I've installed all the true type fonts from Windows/Fonts into /usr/X11/lib/fonts/TTF as well as the Slackware package of 100dpi fonts, and I am running my X server with 100 dpi. Nothing really seems to help, so I'm wondering if anyone has any remedies or suggestions.

Thanks,
hizziaips

Did you run 'fc-cache' after putting the fonts in those directories?

It works for me, and that's all I had to do to get it working.

Are you using an LCD or CRT monitor?

If LCD, have a look over the tutorial I wrote to deal with poor fonts in X.Org on LCDs: LCD Monitor Configuration in X.Org

(Also read the "Fonts and Freetype" section there to understand why the same fonts on MS will not look as good in Linux without some extra work).
