Hi all. I am wondering as I downloaded Linux Slakcware 8.0 and someone told me there is not an i586 version of 8.0. Is this true.

An i586 distro is mearly a Pentium optimised version, you will get a slight performance increase if you run i586 and have a Pentium (or possibly better).

I expect (as I've never used Slack myself) that you can only get i386 (at least when it comes to Intel compatable) which will run fine on 386, 485, Pentium, PII, PIIMMX, PIII, PIV, Athlon, Celeron, Duron and any I have left out.

Slack is like redhat in that it only has an i386+ version, however due to the fact that slack sails so close to the unix standard you can install new software from source with optimisations for your machine arch with the greatest of ease. In 99% of cases you can install without having to pass any prefix options to ./configure at all.

Hehe. Aussie you are right it is i386 I have and that is what I need. One more thing. My specs are

32mb Ram
120mhz Intel Pentium Processor
Lucent Winmodem56k

Will Slack run good on this spec and where can I get Slackware drivers for my winmodem?

Slack shouldn't have any problems running on that machine.

hmm.. i tried to boot off the cd and it said failed to access cdrom device. what now

is this a boot cdrom you burned yourself ?? most likely a bad burn. when burning, make sure your specifying that your burning a iso image.

IIs there no way in hell that I cannot make floppys to boot off then install from the cd as I have no cds spare. I definatly burned the ISO correctly.

Have a look in your bios to see if there is an option to boot from cd.

i couldn't get the cd to boot either..no problem though. all you gotta do is throw the cd in the drive..open up a dos prompt : (assuming your on windows)

type:

d:\
cd bootdsks.144
rawrite

it'll ask for the source file...pick whatever best fits your system...ie: bareapm.i -is ide supported and contains advanced power management...check out http://www.slackware.com/install/bootdisk.php for a list of which would be best for ya..once you've picked it enter the destination drive, ie : a:\, then let it do its work...

After that is done you'll neet the 'rootdisk'..
just:

cd d:\rootdsks
rawrite
when it asks for souce again...give "color.gz" a try..then once again pop in a floppy and your off.
