KDE Plasma No Network Icon

I have just installed 15.0 and have a wifi connection up and running.
Unfortunately there is no Network Icon at the bottom right of the screen.

The KDE page suggested that plasma-nm needs to be installed - it is, but I cannot seem to run it.

The Network Status and Control icon is just a blank and does not display the running network.

BUT, did you use the Network Manager to handle your network connections?

The Plasma5's Network Manager widget (and systray icon) is obviously available only when the NM runs.

I configured the network and had it running before I ran KDE
Was that a mistake?

The Plasma5 integration of Network Manager works only when you manage your network connections with the Network Manager.

This mean that you will lose that IF you use any other ways to configure the network, including the usage of stand-alone /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1

Long story short, the NetworkManager service is active or not? Did you use it to manage your network connections?

In other words: how did you configured your WiFi? Please explain with details.

Then, this means you do not run the NetworkManager service daemon, and this means that no network widgets and no icons in systray for you on Plasma5, because plasma-nm means Plasma NetworkManager and supports only and exclusively the NetworkManager.

This means also that Plasma5 behaves as expected, so you can mark this thread as [SOLVED] ...

Do I comment out all the relevant sections in the earlier mentioned configs, reboot and go straight into KDE using the NM icon which should have appeared?

You have a copy of original /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf.new within package n/network-scripts-15.0-noarch-18.txz

Replace it with the original file, then run netconfig choosing the NetworkManager for management. Also, ensure that /etc/rc.d/rc.networkmanager is executable.

Then reboot and go in Plasma5 - you should able to configure your networks from there.

It hasn't been necessary to do this for a long time. Perhaps 10 years or more. NetworkManager will allow you to traverse networks, which is a handy thing with laptops.

Thanks very much
That did it.
