I'm trying to get KVM to run on my Slack 12.1 gen-smp AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ box. I used the "kvm" SlackBuilds package. "cat /proc/cpuinfo" shows svm is available. The kvm & kvm-amd modules load OK. The process fails when I try to launch the guest OS. I get the following error with both KVM v78 or v79 when I issue the qemu-system-x86_64... command:
Code:
Hypervisor too old: KVM_CAP_USER_MEMORY extension not supported
Could not create KVM context
Doesn't seem to matter what options I add or delete when I launch the guest. Google pulls up a bunch of references to patches when I search on "KVM_CAP_USER_MEMORY" that don't help me. This sounds like it might be a hardware issue. Maybe a chip rev that's not recent enough. The same guest works fine on my Slack 12.1 gen-smp AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ box.
I suppose I could fall back to QEMU/KQEMU if I have too but I prefer KVM and the speed benefits of the hardware-assist.
TIA
