gnu screen anybody?

ogg123 will play oggs.

it wouldn't be hard to write a script to parse a playlist generated with xmms or something and run the appropriate player for the files in question.

the prospect is actually quite inticing.. I think I might do it.

I often have a habit of forgetting when every hard work I will go to sonnerie to listen to music, it helps me relax and relax my mind after stressful working days.

Woah necro thread. I did not look at dates. I'm glad you found it useful!

"play" is nice. It can do this

Go into the directory containing your ogg files and then run:
Code:
ls -1 -b --color=never -d $PWD/*.ogg > playlist.txt
To listen to the playlist:
Code:
ogg123 --list playlist.txt
For more information about how to use ogg123, the man page is your friend:
Code:
man ogg123
In particular to stop playing:
Quote:
INTERRUPT
You can abort ogg123 at any time by pressing Ctrl-C. If you are playing multiple files, this will stop the current file and begin playing the next one.
If you want to abort playing immediately instead of skipping to the next file, press Ctrl-C within the first second of the playback of a new file.

I realize this thread is kind of old. However, I am surprised pianobar is not mentioned.

apropos ogg, apropos mp3. mocp is player with interface as mc file manager - you can browse directories and create easily play list just with tab. mocp can also play radio streams but only ice cast streams like this one http://ice2.somafm.com/defcon-128-aac. To play natively ogg files you can use ogg123. Of course you can use as well mplayer or vlc - say soma radio player is using mplayer as backend.

Edit: I forgot to add. mocp is server - once it starts to play you can detach it form input. Just press q. To reattach run again mocp command.

Like Mark Pettit says, MPlayer will play almost anything:

Code:
mplayer -novideo *
I add "-novideo" because some m4a have the cover picture inside, which in my experience can draw mplayer to push hard the CPU when the environment doesn't allow to display it.

If you like scripting, you can also play with its slave mode to get your basic home-made music server.
