[SOLVED] No sound with Firefox when logged in as user

Hi,

I just upgraded to version 13.37 after many happy years with version 9 ( wireless has gotten much easier

).

The problem I'm having is that if I'm logged in as root Firefox has sound, as would be expected. However, if I'm logged in as a user Firefox has no sound.

When logged in as a user, system sounds are working and I'm able to play mp3s, etc.

I've checked the permissions on /dev/dsp and /dev/snd and they're ok. As a user I also belong to the audio and video groups.

This seems like some sort of permission problem so if anyone knows what I've missed or done wrong please let me know.

try running this

Code:

lsof | grep snd

Check if anything is using the snd device. If the name of the program ends in a 'p' like /dev/snd/pcmC0D0 then that means that snd is currently being used. Simply send a TERMINATE signal to the pid of that process.

Code:

kill -TERM pid

Then reload the page in Firefox or restart Firefox, should work then.

Since your users are in;

I would be sure to have ALSA set properly via (alsamixer) then stored via (alsactl store). If KDE then be sure to check systems settings for sound.

Do not forget to get the flashplugin installed, you can use Alien_Bob's flashplayer-plugin/.
You might consider Alien_Bob's KDE Software Compilation 4.6.3.

I have had issue with low sound on some laptops so I have used a software preamp; Low sound volume in Linux?
