A message to announce that I released Slackware packages of
enlightenment DR17. It contains EFL 1.7.1 and enlightenment alpha2.
You will find too other software like terminology, eperiodique or
elemines.

You will need Slackware 14.0 (i486 or x86_64). You can install the
packages contained in the tarballs with pkgtools.

This release contains debug symbol to help with support. Please
help making the final release bug free!

I will try to update SlackE17 quickly to follow the different
alpha/beta, so expect a new release in a few days with alpha3.

Excellent, thanks for the update I'm looking forward to the alpha3 release, since it will fix the problem with the file manager, where there's a chance to lose data if you move it from a drive to another (lost a couple of slackbuilds like this yesterday...yikes).

Oddly, here the file manager just comes up as a completely blank window. I tried upgrading to the latest version, as linked, and the same thing still happens.

Is that alpha 6 and EFL 1.7.2? I've rolled my own packaged and no probs with the file manager here.

Sorry, I can't reproduce. I'm currently running SlackE17 r79752 on my main box, and I just checked again my dev box which run clean installs of Slackware 14.0 and Slackware64 14.0 and I don't see any problem with the file manager. You could try to remove your ~/.e folder. Or maybe it is a theme issue if you're not using the default one?

There are some minor issues with the wizard for the first time launch, though. Will be fixed in the next batch.

Actually, I provided ConnMann before. You can check older SlackE17 release, there was ConnMann 0.78 and I used it myself often with E17. Unfortunately, there was a lot of changes in the API when ConnMann moved to 1.0 and the E17 modules was stuck using 0.78 for quite a long time. Adapting the E17 module was too much work for the e17 devs who cares about this, mostly because they interface with C. So someone came with another solution: rewriting econnman in Python using the EFL python bindings. Most people would have prefered a native C module, but well, for now it's better than nothing (mean a deprecated ConnMann).

The problem is that this new module requires all the EFL python bindings plus some external Python dependencies not available in stock Slackware. That would mean something like 10 more packages to maintain. I think that is too much a hassle for a so small benefit. Nowadays, I just use NetworkManager. It's working far better than before. You just have to make E17 launch it at start and add a systray to your shelf. When econnman will be available as a C native module, I will consider adding it back to SlackE17, because it's really better for people with slow boxes.
