tty console switching problem

Ever since I first installed 10.2 (this time around) I have not been able to exit X to a cmd prompt or use ctrl+alt+f1-f12 to switch consoles. When I exit X I get a blank screen (if I try to type startx, nothing happens). If I hit anything but ctrl+alt+f6, I get a blank screen, no text or X consoles. If I hit ctrl+alt+f6, I get tty6, but all the text is messed up (readable, but its a full line of text with a repeat of that same line below it and cut in half??). I have the console text mode set to just text, but still same thing. I have gone through video card redetection too, same problem. I've had an install or 4 before this on the same machine and never had this problem. Any ideas??

Do consoles come up normally if you disable or do not start X? (in other words, run in a console-only mode)

I switched to run lvl 3 and the font/tty was OK upon bootup/login. X started OK, but once in X, same problem as before. Full text chars with half chars directly under each char, Or nothing on the screen at all when trying ctrl+alt+f1-f12. BTW, Im using vesa drivers.
