Unknown username "polkitd" in message bus configuration file

Upgraded one of my Virtualbox VM's (Slackware 32 current with XFCE) to the latest (Fri Mar 25 20:43:59 UTC 2016) and upon reboot I see the message above a couple of times before the logon prompt. When I startx into XFCE, the first thing that's noticeable is the slow/unresponsive sound and action buttons on the top panel in the righthand corner.

Ditto.
During boot up the message,

Quote:
Unknown username "polkitd" in message bus configuration file
appears twice.

In /etc I found a directory labeled dbus-1/systemd and it contains several configuration files. Both dbus-1 and systemd directories were dated today.

When I tried to connect to the net via NetworkManager this error message popped up:

Quote:
Connection activation failed
(32) Authorization check failed:
invalid DBUS proxy

Same here , but ....is probably this issue results only if upgrade and not if clean install?

Im upgrade packages, and got the twice message around polkitd user.

slackware64 current

OK, I dug out a recent -current .iso, dated 11 February 2016, and replaced polkit-0.113 with -0.105, polkit-gnome-0.105 with -0.102, NetworkManager-yada-yada-5 with -3, rebooted and all is back to what passes for normal.

I'm having similar issues.

Slackware64-current (25 Mar 2016) full clean install.

Cannot mount USB sticks: (polkit authority not available and caller is not uid 0)
networkmanager: Failed to add connection, Authorization check failed: invalid DBUS proxy

Yeah, oops on this. I forgot to mention in my notes that a polkitd user and group are required.

And what would that polkitd user and group settings be, @rworkman?

I've been bitten by this one too. No wifi here. Just these entries in the logs:

Code:
$ cat /var/log/boot | grep polkit

Not sure if this will be different for Slackware... but LFS

P.S. UID 27 is in use by mysql... so UID must be different to LFS.

Well, I don't know what uid and gid Pat will use, so I'm hesitant to suggest one here - you'd need to edit it after Pat issues a fixed build.

NO. mysql has 27.

I suspect 87, but again, I can't guarantee that.

Yeah, 27 is in use... wonder if there is a "standard" for UIDs... i have added a user with a different UID for testing until this is fixed.

There's no standard as far as I'm aware, or perhaps we could argue that there are *lots* of standards. ;-)

Anyway, here's my best guess for what Pat will use, but it's just a guess - I need to emphasize that you'll have to update the uid and gid after he issues a fixed build.

Insert this line into your /etc/passwd file:
Code:
polkitd:x:87:87:User for PolicyKit:/var/lib/polkit:/bin/false
Insert this line into your /etc/group file:
Code:
polkitd:x:87:

Wow! Everybody is up, you bunch of sleeping heads!

This did the trick to me:

Code:
# groupadd -fg 87 polkitd
# useradd -c "PolicyKit Daemon Owner" -d /var/lib/polkit-1 -u 87 -g polkitd -s /bin/false polkitd
# chown -R polkitd /etc/polkit-1 /var/lib/polkit-1
Note the chown. It didn't work after user/group creation because the rules are only for root eyes.

Rebooted. Logs are clean again, wifi is back and KDE polkit editor works again.

As @rworkman said, be prepared to change UID/GID of the new polkit user if you decide to create it manually.

Good evening, folks!
