I use to be able to start xdm quite easily. But that was long time ago, and can't remember what I actually did. However, I think is just changing the inittab to run level 4 and xdm will start automatically when restart. But it does not work.

Anyone can help?

I got it working. This is very interesting. I always configure X by doing 'xfree86 -configure'. By doing so, a new XF86Config.new file will be created. I just copy this file to /etc/X11/XF86config and able to startx from here.

But for some reasons, this method unable to start xdm. Infact, if I create the XF86Config file via xf86config, xdm start without any problem.

This seems to suggest a different file was created via 'xfree86 -configure' command... Oops forgot to keep a backup of the old XF86Config, I should be able to see some differences by comparing the old and the new files...

Anyway, the problem solved...
