Question Cd Skipping..

I am a VECTORLINUX newbie and I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem.
When I play an audio CD through any of the provided applications, the CD skips badly . I have not encountered this problem with WINDOWS XP. Does anyone have any ideas? I am using an HP Pavilion Desktop with standard, out-of-the-box hardware.
Thanks

Are you sure this is a software problem? Does the computer seem slow and unresponsive when you play the CD? Does this happen with all CDs?

Cd Skipping...

The situation happens with all the audio CD's I have tried and I am usually just sitting listening to the CD and not even touching the keyboard or mouse.

CD Skipping....who cares!

Well I just cleaned my CD-ROM and retried playing my audio CD's in VECTORLINUX SOHO 5.1 and guess what? They don't skip anymore! In fact, they don't play at all now!! They do, however, play perfectly in Windows. Am I surprised? No!! This is typical of every distro that I have tried which is about 7 or 8 now. I will now delete VECTORLINUX from my pc and not bother with LINUX until someone standardizes, tests and supports the product. If I wanted to put a hackers O/S on my pc I would have run an old version of Windows. And that's what linux desktops are; a hacker's O/S. Every distro that I have tried has needed hacking or tweaking to do what Windows does out of the box. Few come with the newest version of FIREFOX and you must immediately upgrade JAVA no matter which version you use. And adding plugins can be a nightmare as you simply cannot just download and run to install. And a lack of proper support makes life for newbies a lot more difficult but, hey, that's what you get with a hobby O/S, right? Anyone with a lot of commercial Windows software they need is screwed as it won't run on LINUX even with the special conversion software. Admittedly, LINUX is faster and probably more stable than Windows out of the box but I use a standard virus program and Windows own spyware detector and never have any problems. But to try to convince people that any LINUX distro is a replacement for Windows is just plain false advertising. Once you get the money behind LINUX to support development and support, once you standardize it so that it runs out of the box on 90% of pc's, once you get commercial software vendors to treat seriously, and once you start blocking every Tom, Dick and Harry with a grand scheme from creating their own little slice of LINUX heaven, you may attract, and keep, Windows users who, like me, just want a good, reliable, safe O/S that, once installed, does all the basic things that Windows does and just as easily. If hackers want to create their own claim-to-fame, let them do so in a controled, monitored and tested environment. You could have a really good product here but at present it still smells like a video game with visions of grandeur. Bill Gates must be pleased.
Bye and....happy LINUXing.
