In the early 1960's there was a bunch of scientists that were worried about another ice age due to some extreme weather.

What bugs me more is on one hand you get scientists that say California has recorded 250 year droughts and Texas 50 year long droughts. Exactly when in that period do you say climate change or not?

Yes, everyone that lives in modern planet earth is part of any change. We are all at fault. There is no free beer. Beer is not eco friendly either.

I agree with hazel except on one point: the entire island of Maui has not burned. About 10-12 square miles out of 735 have actually burned. (Fires are still burning, but mostly under control now.)

In all of human history on the island, it has never been hot and dry enough, for long enough, for this to happen. Until now. So he point is still valid.

You do not say "climate change" because one place or another has a drought. There can be localized climate change, usually because of some kind of mountain building activity changing air flow and moisture patterns or a major change in ocean currents. You say "climate change" when it is not that there is a drought, however intense, but when drought has become the new normal and is not going away.

In the current case the climate change is global, and it is still getting more intense. Our attempts, however admirable, to mitigate the issues causing the problem have been pitiful.

"mal nécessaire"

But lot of things we can do, without suffering too much - like wearing my 10 year old shoes as long as they don't have holes in them.

Climate change is a global threat. Perhaps the most important decisions regarding climate change and responsive government policy, globally, is COP. At the last 3 meetings of the COP, Big Oil had more delegates in attendance than countries did. Talk about "the fox guarding the hen house"! What any individual or even group of individuals can do to protect following generations, your children and grand-children, etc is to fight lobbyists.

I sincerely hope the beer comments are tongue-in-cheek since while I'm all for humor, this is a serious issue, and Big Oil sees billions of dollars at stake. That's what any sane person would call "a vested interest" and you and your families welfare are not part of their agenda. Consider the dark joke about the frog and the scorpion. It's not really a joke but is quite dark considering both die.

To me at least, you never have to apologize for not drinking beer a lot!

Much of the area that burned in Maui is on the leeward side of the West Maui mountains and frequently gets less than 10 inches of rain per year. It is also my understanding that there was a lot of dry brush that fueled the 'wildfire.'

BALTIMORE (Oct. 16, 2023) — "Constellation (Nasdaq: CEG), the nation’s largest producer of carbon-free energy, is a major participant in the MachH2 hydrogen hub recently selected for up to $1 billion by the Department of Energy (DOE) as part of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Constellation will use a portion of the hub funding to build the world’s largest nuclear-powered clean hydrogen production facility at its LaSalle Clean Energy Center in Illinois."

Back a few decades ago I went through a kombucha craze but never tried kefir, both of which can be slightly alcoholic, +/- 2%. In Eastern Europe and Russia there is a cocktail that uses kefir similar to the 'White Russian' drink made famous by the movie "The Big Lebowski." It's called the 'Anna Kournikova.'
I took an early out from a job in the late 90s and helped a buddy run a series of bars as resident 'peace keeper', barback and emergency bartender. After Jeff Bridges popularised the drink as "The Dude" some nights I would make a seemingly endless string of White and Black Russians.

Here's an interesting article on a new green source of energy.

The UK has many worked-out and abandoned coal mines. They flood, and geothermal heat warms the water to about 20C, up to 45C in deep mines. This can then be heated a bit further and used for district heating.

The exhaust water goes back into the mine to be heated up again. Unlike solar and wind energy, geothermal heat works in all weather and all the year round.

Even if the process would work, and it was cost effective, much more study would be critical. Until there is profit to be made, no one will invest in it.

There is no shortage of heat in the earths core, but what wuld happen if everybody got their energy from geothermal? There is no free lunch, whaever we do has an impact.

Had we been using geothermal instead of carbon based fuels for the last 140 years climate change would still be at such low levels it would be difficult to measure. Energy solutions that do not dump greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere have many order of magnitude less impact and it is easier to mitigate.

Er, I think you guys are missing the point, which is this:

What's going to stop the guys who are making €€€Megabucks as things are, suddenly cut off the supply of €€€Megabucks to themselves?

What's going to stop Putin's Russia pumping oil? Or any of them? Because if something doesn't stop oil consumption & methane emissions, the best hope for this planet is actually Revelation 11:18

To save you looking that up, it isn't a hope for mankind in general - just the planet.
