My two other laptops use the same Intel 82801DB-ICH4 (sound works on both) so I used the same configuration.
I'm not getting any errors when I try to play mp3's using xmms or juk or watch a movie w/ mplayer. I'm just not getting any sound.
I already tried kmix, alsamixer to max the volume still no sound.
Please help. Thank you.
You did check that everything was unmuted, right? Since the sliders can be at max, but if you don't notice it is muted (easy to miss in alsamixer) obviously there will be no sound.
Also, it could be that one of the other controls in something like alsamixer controls your master sound.
For instance, on my machine, "Master" doesn't do anything, and "Headphones" controls my audio volume (and no, I don't have the speakers plugged into the headphone port).
$su -
$alsamixer
Configure bars with arrows, enable or disable service with "m" key.
When done ESC
#alsactl store
If you have 5.1 speaker system, be sure that LFE channels bars are all way down and [off]. LFE channel is to generate 5.1 emulation matrix on 4 speaker systems.
P.S. KEEP IN MIND THAT SOUND SYSTEM WON'T WORK AFTER THAT PROCEDURE. REBOOT NEEDED!
try to unmute all "headphone" switches in alsamixer. I have the same chip in my thinkpad and once when I made kernel update there were some new switches in alsamixer.
I know... I have two other laptops using the same chipsets and they work great.
I don't know what's wrong with this one..
The volume control on this laptop looks like this http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/...201rtr44.shtml
it's a jog dial so you need to press forward or backward different from many other laptops that I have. Do you think this is causing the problem?
unlikely!
See that in KDE control centre sound architecture doesn't contradict.
You could also bootup Slax LiveCD and copy the sound settings. I use this trick on ATI Radeon 9600XT. I bootup Suse LiveCD and copy settings to Slackware. Great detection and faST 3D support
Your lspci says your audio controller is:
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB (ICH4) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)
Preliminaries:
1. DON'T uninstall the alsa package installed by Slackware. The Man put a config file in that package which is essential for the sound.
2. If you "removepkg" the alsa package, reinstall The Man's (www.slackware.com) ALSA package.
Steps:
1. Go to http://www.alsa-project.org/
2. Download ALSA driver source, library source, alsa-oss, utils, and tools.
3. Unpack all as root in /usr/src
4. Go to directory /usr/src/alsa-driver-*
5. ./configure --with-cards=intel8x0 --with-sequencer=yes;make;make install
6. chmod a+rw /dev/dsp /dev/mixer /dev/sequencer /dev/midi
7. Go into alsa-lib
8. ./configure;make;make install
9. Go into alsa-utils
10. ./configure;make;make install
11. Go into alsa-oss
12. ./configure;make;make install
13. modprobe snd-intel8x0;modprobe snd-pcm-oss;modprobe snd-mixer-oss;modprobe snd-seq-oss
14. alsaconf
15. alsamixer #set the volume
16. alsactl -store
14. You should have sound if not, please come back and we can figure something out.
