I'm running Slackware 10.1 but someone of this forum told me to try Slax and see if the sound works there. I'm gonna try your method right now. Thanks.
I won't act like I know exactly what is going on. But there are two ways of getting ALSA modules working. One is to compile it in the kernel and the other is to compile the ALSA sources (after making sure that ALSA isn't already compiled in the kernel). Even if ALSA was compiled in the kernel, it should work just the same as it would have if it was compiled from ALSA sources. But I once tried to get ALSA working from the kernel in Slackware, but I couldn't get it to work. So I suggest that you recompile your kernel without the ALSA related modules and without OSS related modules... (don't don't disable any other sound related modules). Then try to recompile ALSA. If it doesn't work, please come back... I would really like for you to have your sound while using your computer.
Copying asound.state will only copy information like how much the volumes are set to and stuff like that. I don't think it would be of much help. But try it anyway.
Well.... once you get Slackware again, then I guess we will see what is happening.
I fixed it. All I had to do was uncheck(mute) External Amplifier, Headphone Jack Stero, and Line Jack Sense.
There was nothing wrong w/ my kernel or alsa... Thanks for trying to help me shashir.
I knew it had to be something other than the kernel or alsa because I have two laptops with the same sound chipset.
The gateway laptops have this weird problem.
Thanks for posting the fix you found for this. I just had the same problem with my intel chipset on my laptop in Vector Linux and this fixed it for me. I had found the External amplifier fix in a number of places but not the other two. Thanks again for posting what worked for you.
no problem.. good to hear that it helped you.
Now I need to find a place to stay since the Hurricane Katrina destroyed my home...
I lost my linux server....
